The Opportunity

Orion seeks to hire a student GIS Intern with Python programming skills to work for 40 hours per week (with the potential for flexible hours if the candidate is doing summer classes) for 10-12 weeks in June, July, and August. This internship will be in-person at least 3 days per week. The role will be compensated at $25/hour with commuting benefits available. This position will work with a team of three other GIS Analysts, and will utilize GIS techniques and Python scripting to facilitate the siting and development of utility-scale renewable energy projects. This includes automating GIS workflows, researching existing data sources, structuring and creating new data layers used to help to assess solar and wind farm site suitability. Candidates from computer science, data science or GIS backgrounds who have taken GIS courses and are proficient in Python are encouraged to apply.

Requirements for applicants

General understanding of spatial data concepts, projection systems and data management

Python language proficiency

Good understanding of ArcMap/ArcPro

Experience with Microsoft Excel

College junior or above

Fast learner with an interest in the world of renewable energy

Access to broadband internet of at least 5 mbps if not working in the Orion office

Desired but not required for applicants:

Familiar with programming collaboratively using GIT

Understanding of Geodatabases, ModelBuilder

Knowledge of spatial analyst tools

Experience using Google Earth and working with KML files

Ability to work under deadline pressure

Environmental Science education/experience
