Job Summary: $23 to 30 hr
The Utility Locator is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking underground utilities, including water, gas, electric, sewer, and telecommunications lines. This role ensures that digging and excavation operations are conducted safely by accurately marking the presence of buried infrastructure to prevent damage. Utility Locators play a key role in protecting underground assets and ensuring public safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform utility locating activities by using specialized equipment (e.g., electromagnetic or GPR locating equipment) to detect and mark the location of underground utilities.
Read and interpret utility maps, prints, and schematics to identify the presence of utilities in designated work areas.
Communicate with contractors, project managers, and field crews to coordinate safe excavation efforts.
Mark utility locations with paint, flags, or other marking tools according to industry standards.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of locate activities, including reporting on damaged or faulty utilities.
Respond to emergency locate requests and provide timely services to avoid disruption or hazards during excavation work.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding utility locating and safety procedures.
Participate in safety meetings, training, and continuous education on utility locating techniques and equipment usage.
Perform maintenance and calibration of locating equipment to ensure accuracy.
Report damages or inconsistencies to supervisors or utility providers as required.
Provide excellent customer service when interacting with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Previous experience in utility locating or a related field is required.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
Proficiency in reading maps, blueprints, and utility prints.
Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work in a variety of terrains and conditions, including construction sites and roadways.
Work Schedule:
Full-time. Some overtime or weekend work may be required depending on project demands.
