Join our Building Inspections team as a Permit Technician! We're looking for a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional to support our permitting process. In this role, you'll perform a variety of administrative tasks to help ensure the smooth operation of building permit applications, plan reviews, and inspections. As a key point of contact for residents, contractors, and developers, you’ll provide information on permitting requirements, intake and process applications, and assist with scheduling inspections. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Answers telephone for the Inspections, Neighborhood Reinvestment and Planning Divisions.
Assists customers at the Inspections/Engineering/Planning/Fire/Housing counter.
Reviews submitted permit applications and plansubmittals for general completeness.
Calculates all permit fees.
Prepares and monitors work processes from intake to the issuance of a permit including inspections.
Processes and issues permits.
Maintains computer records on all permits and tracks permit status. Updates computer and physical files daily. Scans documents into LaserFiche for record retention.
Compiles and prepares statistical reports relative to permits and inspections.
Provides information and assistance to the public regarding the permit process, building code requirements and licensing provisions.
Performs cashier duties.
Processes inspection requests: verifies final inspection clearance and prepares Certificates of Occupancy for issuance.
Conducts research as needed to verify property location, legal description, lot dimensions, zoning, contractor information and other project information. Prepares reports on construction activity and the status of projects for management and other government agencies.
Prepares and submits month’s surcharge and activity reports.
Takes and responds to requests for records and historical documents.
Collaborate with customers and inspectors to schedule inspections, document construction and project status and issue the appropriate documentation with compliance to established codes and regulations.
Assists in the management of the City’s rental license program, including verifying status of property ownership, tracking submitted license applications, entering results of rental property inspections, and issuing licenses to property owners.
Assists with the water shut off program including answering phone calls regarding the status of a property’s water service, (whether service has been disconnected or posted for disconnection, distributing and collecting waivers to keep the water service active and providing information and forms to restore water service).
Assists applicants to obtain various required City approvals. Assists in determining which permits are required. Provides applications, information and agency referrals required by the category and complexity of the project.
Codes invoices and purchasing for the department.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the public.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge and proficiency of building inspections software, such as LOGIS PIMS, Permitworks or BS&A.
Knowledge and experience in office procedures.
Computer knowledge and data entry skills.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Maintains current knowledge of applicable state and county codes.
Attend training sessions for certifications as needed.
Ability to work in a busy office environment with a high volume of phone calls and counter traffic.
Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Ability to handle inquiries from general public in a friendly and courteous manner.
Ability to work cooperatively with City personnel, external vendors and the public.

Qualifications and Other Information
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:
High school diploma/equivalent plus at least one (1) year of related administrative support work experience in permitting, building, residential & commercial inspections.
Demonstrated success with computer applications, including database and word processing applications.
Proven ability to communicate courteously, effectively, and tactfully in written and oral form.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates degree in business or related field.
Two or more years of administrative support experience working for multiple managers.
Ability to type 60 wpm.
Local Government work experience

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
This position will be located at the City Center. It will use common office supplies and equipment, and the noise level is generally quiet. Exposure to computer monitors in the office is typical. This position works closely with others.
