Summary Description:
The Manager, DER Engineering reports to the Manager, Energy Services & Technology. This position is responsible for managing NCEMC’s Distributed Energy Resource (DER) engineering team and for managing DER and microgrid projects that support portfolio optimization and reliability purposes. The Manager, DER Engineering, will help oversee DER projects over their entire lifecycle, ensuring consistency and operability across the fleet.
Academic and Trade Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in engineering or other related science is required. A professional engineering license is preferred as this role directly supervises a team of engineers.
Work Experience:
At least eight (8) years of progressive power/energy experience, including personnel and project management experience in those roles. Specific experience with DER (solar, battery energy storage, and solar plus storage) or microgrid projects is preferred. A working knowledge of operational standards, safety standards, and best practices related to DER and microgrids is required.
Responsibilities:
Engineering Leadership
Manage a team of engineers in the design, construction, commissioning and online support of NCEMC’s DER and microgrid projects
Lead technical decision making that improves short-term and long-term performance of NCEMC’s DER and microgrid assets
Coordinate with internal stakeholders to develop and maintain the NCEMC DER Technical Requirements to drive quality, standardization, and efficiency
Lead and assist team in planning and coordinating major projects with multiple stakeholder groups
Develop control and operational framework with member distribution cooperatives for DER and microgrids
Maintain the lessons learned repository to track issues and resolutions
Lead team of stakeholders in the development of comprehensive sequences of operation for microgrids
Ensure that projects are fully integrated into the NCEMC operational control and monitoring platforms (EMS and DERMS)
Project Management
Collaborate with NCEMC leadership, member cooperatives, and internal stakeholders to set the direction for projects and manage project requirements, timelines, and budgets
Manage strategic external partnerships with vendors to support the construction, commissioning, and operation of NCEMC’s fleet of DER
Prepare, negotiate, and manage construction contracts and support engineering design agreements and major equipment supply agreements
Utilize and improve Portfolio Project Management (PPM) standard practices and tools to enhance Project Development process
Help develop project charters for all new projects to establish clear responsibilities
Help establish turnover procedures and checklists for transitioning projects into commercial operation
Utilize Asana project management tool for task tracking
Supporting Roles
Provided technical support to other internal departments to ensure lessons learned and technical design standards are utilized to ensure consistency and operability
Manage relationships with research partners to meet the objectives of site-specific projects
Reporting
Lead stakeholder meetings (internal/external) to engage stakeholders and share project information
Develop and deliver reports on workplace activities as directed by the Manager, Energy Services & Technology
Develop presentations and white papers in support of updating NCEMC and cooperative leadership, providing case studies to NCEMC and partner entities, and advertising the capabilities of NCEMC’s DER fleet.
General
Assist with the annual work plan and budget preparations
Periodically report and present on activities
Maintain professional development
Perform other duties as directed by the Manager, Energy Services & Technology
Job Knowledge:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety standards, operational standards, and best practices related to DER projects (ie IEEE standards, UL safety standards, and EPRI best practices)
Detailed working knowledge of SEL software and hardware
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market conditions including policy, interconnection, permitting and competition
Detailed working knowledge of personal computers is necessary, including software applications required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required, MS project software skills is a plus

Relationships and Contacts:
Reports to: Manager, Energy Services & Technology and is accountable to him or her for results achieved
Directs: Internal direct report(s)
Internal Relationships: Shall build and maintain internal relationships within NCEMC departments necessary to achieve the purpose of the position and the desired results
External Relationships: Shall build and maintain external relationships necessary to achieve the purpose of the position and the desired results. This includes vendors, research partners, and contractors to develop, operate and maintain DER projects.
Working Conditions:
Normal office or work at home conditions with occasional overtime, travel to Member EMCs, and various other locations. NCEMC’s current work schedule is three (3) days in the office and two (2) days remote.
