Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either title in the Engineer job family. For this posting, minimum requirements are written at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade.

Engineer (mid-level) (grade 7) = bachelor's degree in engineering + four (4) years of experience; OR, master's degree in engineering + two (2) years of experience

Additional Position Information:
This position will be part of the Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Studies and Standards team, a part of Distribution’s Modeling and Analysis Department.
The team’s core functions include, but are not limited to,
Executing DER pre-application reports, screening assessments and interconnection studies across the AEP footprint.
Coordinating, supporting, and reviewing work performed by external consultants.
Developing and upkeeping AEP Distribution’s DER interconnection policies, standards and requirements.
Supporting regulatory and policy support and advocacy in the DER space for the Distribution Planning.
Evaluating new technologies and participating in industry forums related to DER for the Distribution Planning and Analysis functions.
Candidates must have knowledge relevant to the following areas:
Reading and interpreting electrical distribution system one-line diagrams.
Reading and interpreting equipment nameplates and specification sheets.
Electric utility medium voltage (2.4kV to 34.5kV) distribution systems.
Distribution system equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, reclosers and voltage regulation equipment.
Electric distribution system modeling software (CYME, ASPEN, PSSE, Easy Power or similar) for the purposes of building of system models and completing power flow and short circuit analyses.
Candidates that have experience with the above DER work, Distribution Planning, Station Engineering, Transmission Planning (or Transmission function), Transmission or Distribution Operations, or utility work in general may present a good fit for this opportunity. Knowledge and understanding of basic distribution system components and operation and electric system modeling software is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Technical Expertise: Possesses advanced knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analyses. Understands interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Analyzes and recommends enhancements to business processes.
Leadership and Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine engineering work. Performs routine engineering activity independently. Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees. Planning and Organizational Ability: Develops input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc.
Resolves and initiates solutions to routine and/or moderately complex problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Identifies problems that are beyond the normal routine. Seeks out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.
Communication Skills: Helps coordinate the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner.
Interpersonal Skills: Leads aspects of team effort. Effectively leverages skills developed from company programs such as Power Up & Lead.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a master’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.
Experience: Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience.
Individuals with a PhD in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Acceptable alternatives are
Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or
Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited bachelor’s program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($84,000 - $122,000). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, educational assistance, etc.
*VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with an non-ABET accredited program
