About Direct Support Staff:This position is 35 hours per week. Supervises and instructs individuals with disabilities on fundamental skills and/or personal support services in either facility or community settings. Teaches appropriate social skills that will enable individuals to be successful. Assists with personal care as needed.
Essential Functions
Assigns and supervises the activities for individuals.
Provides instruction on skill-building and appropriate behaviors.
Provides guidance and assistance to individuals to maximize their skills.
Assists individuals with personal care needs, positioning, mobility, prescribed physical and occupational therapy activities, hygiene and first aid as necessary.
Completes assessments of individuals.
Documents and maintains records and reports in written or electronic form.
Participates in staff and consumer meetings and conferences as necessary and assists in developing individual service plan goals.
Provides individuals with proper equipment and supplies.
Serves as bus monitor for arrivals and departures of consumers as needed.
Always maintains quality standards.
May serve as liaison with community organizations.
May provide transportation for individuals as directed.
May assist in orientation of new staff.
Responsible for ensuring that assigned area is a safe environment.
May administer medications.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma and at least 20 hours of coursework beyond the high school level in the areas of sociology, psychology, social work, human services, education, or rehabilitation required.
One (1) to three (3) years of experience working with persons with disabilities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and demonstrate lifting, pushing, and pulling capabilities as part of the pre-employment process.
