Definition

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled sign fabrication; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Installs pressure sensitive sheeting material to metal sign blanks, using mechanical sheeting applicators;

Operates computerized equipment dedicated to the production of signs;

Prepares new metal sign blanks for the application of sheeting material;

Prepares used metal sign blanks for the application of sheeting material by straightening and repairing damaged surfaces;

Prepares wood and/or plastic laminate material to ensure fit on routing table;

Prepares and installs fleet graphics onto City vehicles;

Designs signs and sign layouts using computer and other means;

Makes silk screens, sign patterns and layouts;

Cuts out and installs standard letters and symbols on signs;

Selects appropriate routing bit for engraving dependent upon type of sign needed and material being used;

Silk screens lettering and symbols on signs;

Fabricates large freeway and/or park signs;

May direct the work activities of a helper as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience performing traffic sign installation or maintenance or assisting in the fabrication of signs. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade requirement

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 40% covering Problem Sensitivity, Safety, Mathematics, Information Ordering, and Reading Sign Design Plans; a work sample exam weighted 30% covering recreating a sign on the computer; and a multiple-choice exam weighted 30% covering Name, Number, and Sign Comparison (speed and accuracy).

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
