Job Summary: The 3D Printer and Milling Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining both 3D printing and milling equipment to produce dental restorations, models, and other devices. This role includes preparing digital files, selecting materials, managing the printing and milling processes, and ensuring the highest quality of dental products. The ideal candidate will have proficiency in both 3D printing and milling technologies, strong attention to detail, and an understanding of dental materials and their applications.

Key Responsibilities:

3D Printing:

Operate and maintain 3D printers to produce dental models, crowns, bridges, dentures, and other restorations.

Prepare and convert digital files (STL, CAD, etc.) for printing, ensuring the accuracy and compatibility of the files with the 3D printer.

Select and load the appropriate materials (resins, waxes, etc.) based on the specific dental application.

Monitor the 3D printing process to ensure proper calibration, alignment, and resolution of printed products.

Post-process printed models and restorations, including cleaning, curing, and finishing to ensure readiness for use.

Milling:

Operate and maintain milling machines to fabricate dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays, from materials like ceramics, resins, and metal.

Prepare digital files for milling and ensure they meet the specifications for the desired restoration.

Select and load appropriate materials for the milling process.

Monitor the milling process to ensure precision, accuracy, and quality of the finished product.

Post-process milled products by cleaning, polishing, and finishing to achieve the desired result.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

Regularly maintain 3D printing and milling equipment, including performing routine checks, cleaning, and troubleshooting any mechanical or software issues.

Calibrate machines to ensure high-precision outputs and minimize defects.

Report any issues with equipment or material shortages to the laboratory manager.

Quality Control:

Inspect finished products for accuracy, quality, and fit, ensuring that they meet the required dental specifications.

Perform necessary adjustments or refinements to ensure the final products are aesthetically and functionally correct.

Collaboration & Communication:

Work closely with dental technicians, dentists, and other laboratory staff to ensure that products meet the clinical and aesthetic needs of patients.

Communicate effectively with the laboratory team to resolve any issues that may arise during the manufacturing process.

Documentation & Inventory Management:

Keep detailed records of production schedules, materials used, and equipment maintenance.

Assist in managing the inventory of 3D printing and milling materials, ensuring adequate stock levels.

Qualifications:

Proven experience operating and maintaining 3D printers and milling equipment in a dental laboratory or similar environment.

Strong knowledge of dental materials and their applications in 3D printing and milling processes (e.g., resins, ceramics, metals).

Proficiency in dental CAD software (e.g., 3Shape, Exocad, or other relevant software) for preparing files for both 3D printing and milling.

Experience with both additive (3D printing) and subtractive (milling) manufacturing processes in the dental field.

Strong attention to detail and the ability to ensure high-quality, accurate results.

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to both 3D printing and milling machines.

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or certifications in dental technology or CAD/CAM systems preferred.

Certification in dental technology (e.g., CDT) is a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple projects.

Ability to interpret dental prescriptions and ensure that the products meet clinical and aesthetic specifications.

Good communication skills for collaborating with other team members and understanding the needs of the dental professionals.

Familiarity with post-processing techniques for both 3D printed and milled products, including polishing, finishing, and quality assurance.

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed in a dental laboratory environment, operating 3D printing and milling equipment.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and safety glasses is required.

Occasional standing or sitting for long periods may be required.

Exposure to dental materials, chemicals, and laboratory tools.
