Summary:

Environmental Services – Floor Care Technicians are responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within hospital, patient rooms, across campus facilities, including administrative buildings, office spaces, restrooms, laboratories, departments, and all common areas. This position plays a vital role in ensuring a welcoming and well-maintained hospital campus for patients, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Essential Functions:

Perform routine and deep cleaning of various flooring surfaces, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, buffing, and polishing.

Operate and maintain floor care equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, and burnishers.

Conduct scheduled floor maintenance, including applying sealants, coatings, and protectors to prolong floor lifespan.

Perform carpet cleaning tasks, including shampooing, spot treatment, and extraction.

Identify and address stains, damage, and wear on flooring surfaces, reporting any major repairs needed.

Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including the proper handling and storage of chemicals and equipment.

Work closely with EVS Director, Facilities Superintendent and Maintenance staff to coordinate floor care schedules and minimize disruptions to hospital operations.

Assist in moving furniture and equipment as needed for floor maintenance.

Respond to emergency spills and floor-related hazards promptly to ensure a safe environment.

Maintain accurate records of floor care activities and supply usage.

Perform additional Environmental Services tasks as assigned to support housekeeping duties and responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience

Some Environmental Services experience preferred but not required.

High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Basic knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and safety procedures is a plus.

Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with patients, guests, faculty, and hospital staff.

Willingness to work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

Ability to read and write. Must (after brief training) be able to demonstrate the correct use of chemicals, supplies and equipment assigned.

Work Environment:

Working Conditions: Contact with potentially infectious diseases which can be contracted via airborne particles and body fluids. Proper training and personal protective equipment are provided by the facility to reduce or eliminate the risk of contracting these diseases.

Physical Requirements: Position requires extended periods of walking and standing. Lifting to 50- 100 pounds and transporting up to 300 pounds on carts. Pushing and pulling of carts, bending, stooping, and reaching, while storing supplies and in cleaning activities. The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions or directions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 300 pounds with full range of body and motion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This position operates primarily in a clinical setting and may have direct contact with patients, visitors, and medical staff. This role may involve exposure to hazardous material and infectious diseases. May work long or irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
