The Lieutenant functions as a BCEMS Paramedic and management resource.

May be assigned to one of several roles solely or concurrently: fulfilling a Paramedic position on an ambulance or filling in for a Battalion Chief in their absence.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs all the duties of a BCEMS staff Paramedic.

In addition, is responsible for: * Responds to EMS calls and assists with coordination of patient care and manage on scene EMS operations.

* Functions as the "officer in charge" when assigned as a member of an ambulance.

* Responsible for ensuring assigned employees are performing in accordance with established BCEMS treatment guidelines and procedures, operational standards, policies, procedures and guidelines.

* Assists in the development and implementation of guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures for training, operations, and medical standards.

* Continually evaluates EMS operational readiness and effectiveness of our service, keeping the Battalion Chiefs apprised of important developments or recommendations for improvement.

* Inspects and manages assigned stations, crews and vehicles to ensure operational readiness.

* Communicate with crews, Battalion Chiefs, and other Lieutenants to keep all abreast of any changes and makes recommendations for improvements to overall operations.

* Participates in call critiques with crews as needed and performs QA functions per BCEMS Training Division recommendations.

* Assists the Training Division with training, mentorship, and evaluation of BCEMS patient care staff, new and probationary employees related to BCEMS operations which includes, but is not limited to: station activities, clinical performance, vehicle operation, and administrative paperwork/procedures, departmental and County policy * Participates in staff meetings, as assigned, and provides input relative to operations.

* Serve as role models, mentors, educational, and operational resources for fellow employees.

* Serves as an "Acting Battalion Chief". * Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: * High School diploma or equivalent.

* Three (3) years' experience as a Paramedic.

* A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.

Special Requirements: * Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record; * Valid National Registry and South Carolina Paramedic license.

* Must possess and maintain certifications in American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). * Instructor certifications in AHA and NAEMT preferred.

Position requires instructor certifications in at least two disciplines within six (6) months of promotion and maintain instructor certifications while holding this position.

* ICS100, ICS200, IS700, IS800 required.

ICS300 and ICS400 are required within one (1) year of accepting promotion.

* NAEMSE Instructor Level I (40 hour) or equivalent preferred.

Position requires formal instructor certification as a foundation.

Personnel accepting promotion to Lieutenant who do not meet this qualification must acquire this instructor certification within 12 months of promotion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Skill in using personal computers including Word and Excel preferred.

* Ability to function in cramped and confined spaces, unsanitary conditions or hazardous environments such as those created by fire, traffic collisions, mechanical collapse, weather and human acts.

* Ability to manage inventory and property.

* Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery.

* Ability to supervise employees using or repairing heavy machinery.

* Ability to make budget recommendations.

This position requires the employee to sit and use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; crouch, kneel and stoop; and walk, talk and hear.

The employee must occasionally lift up to one hundred eighty (180) pounds with one assistant.

Cardiovascular conditioning should be sufficient for the extended performance of cardiac chest compressions, maneuvering and lifting of the gurney and other transport tools, and transport of medical equipment and patient belongings.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

24/48 hour work rotation on assigned unit.

While performing the duties of this job; the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
