Job Description

The Fiber Lineman will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing aerial and underground fiber optic cables. You will work on utility poles, in trenches, and in other outdoor environments to ensure our customers' reliable delivery of high-speed internet and other fiber optic services.

REQUIREMENTS

Installation: Install fiber optic cables on utility poles and in underground conduits. Ensure proper cable placement and tension to avoid damage.

Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on aerial and underground fiber optic cables. Identify and resolve signal loss, cable damage, and connectivity problems.

Splicing and Termination: Splice and terminate fiber optic cables using appropriate tools and techniques. Conduct testing to ensure signal quality and integrity.

Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to industry standards and regulations.

Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain various tools and equipment, including bucket trucks, trenchers, splicing machines, and testing devices.

Documentation: Accurately document all work performed, including installations, repairs, and maintenance activities. Complete work orders and service requests as required.

Customer Interaction: Communicate effectively with customers and team members to provide updates on project status and address any concerns or questions.

Team Collaboration: Work closely with other linemen, technicians, and field operations staff to coordinate efforts and ensure project success.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent. Technical training or certification in fiber optics or telecommunications is preferred.

Minimum of 2 years of experience as a lineman or in a related field, with specific experience in fiber optic cable installation and maintenance.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Proficiency in fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing techniques.

Strong understanding of aerial and underground cable installation practices.

Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and documentation.

Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

Good communication and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements: Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in various weather conditions. Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and materials.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

TRAVEL NECESSARY based on location(s) supported.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Depending on the assigned area, usually outdoor, warehouse, or construction environment with frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing. Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enables the use of machinery and equipment. Oral and auditory capacity enables interpersonal communication and communication through automated devices like the telephone. Physical stamina to handle the long hours of performing strenuous work during the day in hot or cold weather. The noise level in the work environment ranges from normal office levels to loud levels due to equipment and machinery use.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS

Each employee is responsible for his/her own safety. No task should be completed unless it can be completed safely. Employees will:

Comply with all company safety programs, rules, regulations, procedures, and instructions applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.

Refrain from any unsafe act that might endanger him/herself or fellow workers.

Obey all posted company, state, and federal hazard and traffic safety signs.

Use all safety devices and personal protective equipment provided for their protection.

Report all hazards, incidents, and near-miss occurrences to their immediate supervisor or Director of Safety within 2 hours, even if no injury or property damage occurred.

Promptly report all injuries and suspected work-related illnesses, however slight, to his/her immediate supervisor or Director of Safety.

Employees who drive company vehicles must possess a valid and appropriate driver’s license for driving the vehicle, and employees who operate company equipment must be trained and authorized.

Employees operating company vehicles and equipment must comply with state and federal laws and regulations. Seat belt use is required while operating any company vehicle or equipment.

Texting while driving is prohibited by Dobson Fiber policy and State Law.

Participate in safety committee meetings, training sessions, and surveys as requested and provide input into improving safety.

Notify your supervisor or Human Resources immediately of any change in physical or mental condition or use of prescription drugs or illegal drugs that would affect the employee’s job performance or the safety of him/herself or others.

Working under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is strictly prohibited at any company facility, workplace, worksite, or when operating any company vehicle or equipment. Any employee, contractor, or subcontractor who works or reports to work under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible termination of employment or loss of contract.

Notify the Human Resources Director within five days of serious driving, drug/alcohol, or criminal convictions.

Be a safe worker on and off the job.

Help coworkers do their job safely.

Approach work with a safe attitude.
