Position Description:

To construct, test, and repair prototype gas or solid-state laser devices, according to engineering layouts and specifications, following instructions for electronic circuits. Analyzes test data and reports results to project engineers.

Essential Functions:

Reviews plans with engineering team to clarify specifications for laser devices.

Interprets instructions for production workers who grind the mirror blanks and machine metal parts and install and align them.

Operates vacuum pumps to empty laser body, refills it with the specified number of gases, such as helium, carbon dioxide, or neon, checks pressure, and performs required tests.

Assembles laser device in chassis and connects regulatory dials and switches.

Sets up electronic and optical instruments to test laser devices at various electrical or optical inputs.

Also tests for gas leaks.

Analyzes and reports test findings to engineering team.

When results indicate problems, the technician will suggest ideas for consideration by project engineers.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED certificate required.

Completion of a technical school course as a laser technician. This usually requires two-year training course.

One to two years of experience working in the actual construction of laser devices. Part of this may be part of a work-study program as long as actual working conditions are used in the training program.

Ability to accurately read engineering drawings and specifications.

Computer and writing skills sufficient to prepare test reports and recommendations to engineering team.

Lou-Rich Training Requirements:

Applicable training will be completed by following the syllabi (Human Resources, Safety, IFS - Timeclock, IFS - Navigation, ISO) for each new hire and that will be verified by the Employee Orientation & Job Qualification form within the first 60 days of employment.

Applicable training will be completed by following the Assembly or Press Room Training Matrix (F4400-35 or -041). The effectiveness of assembly training guidelines will be determined by employee knowledge and demonstration of learned concepts. Additional training after the first several weeks of on-the-job training will be determined by the Supervisor in preparation to operate on their own as needed. Any follow-up training will be evaluated and provided at the 60-day review or as deemed necessary for the position.

Pay Range: $19.00 - $26.00
