Summary

We are looking for creative individuals who enjoy engaging with indigenous communities on a wide range of archival needs. The Digital Archivist is responsible for working with a range of digital and physical materials generated and obtained by the Myaamia Center and National Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages (National BoL). These primarily consist of language, cultural, and historical materials that need to be digitally repatriated for community-directed curation, preservation, and dissemination. This position requires extensive collaboration with archives across and outside the U.S. that possess holdings related to Indigenous communities while also working closely with communities who partner with National BoL to develop community-curated archives.

Job Description

Duties:

Implementing and managing the internal archival system for Myaamia Center

and National BoL.

Curating and managing digital collections by establishing the metadata schema and controlled vocabularies, while also exercising quality control of the software, equipment, and metadata records.

Creating policies and procedures for managing born-digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organization, description, and access.

Working with a range of stakeholders, including Miami University Libraries, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma’s National Archives, and tribal communities partnering with National BoL, to ensure archival materials are shared or duplicated and available for research and community-directed use.

Facilitating access to archival collections by compiling finding aids and creating collection-level records, metadata descriptions, and/or controlled vocabularies.

Managing the digital collections repository and preservation of digital assets.

Manage and curate Miami Tribe’s photographic archive.

Maintaining professional relationships and contact with major archives housing

indigenous materials required by National BoL communities.

Assisting National BoL communities with locating, accessing, digitizing, and securing copies of language materials from various archives for tribal communities.

Assisting National BoL apprentices and partner communities with archival management needs and integration of digital copies in the Indigenous Languages Digital Archive (ILDA).

Assisting National BoL apprentices and Fellows with the use of archives for developing educational programs through the educational portal.

Contributing to a work environment encouraging knowledge of and respect for National BoL tribal communities.

Developing skills that directly support National BoL tribal communities.

Remaining competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Myaamia Center Executive Director.

Contributing to the success of the Myaamia Center’s collections by performing digitization duties, supervising student assistants, and conducting all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's degree or higher in library science (MLS), education, linguistics, history, or a

related discipline.

Consideration will be given to applicants with:

A master’s in library science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or a graduate degree in linguistics, education, or a related discipline. Significant graduate-level coursework in archival administration/theory.

A minimum of two years in processing digital archival collections, including project management experience, creating metadata descriptions, digitization, and the preservation of born-digital materials.

Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Familiarity with cataloging, various computer applications, and metadata creation. Previous experience or demonstrated ability in developing knowledge of, respect for, and skills for engaging with Native American communities. Experience in outreach activities and supervisory experience.

Digital Archives Specialist Certificate from the Society of American Archivists.
