The City of Virginia Beach Police Department provides a safe community for our residents by delivering quality police services and enforcing laws with equity and impartiality.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Plan, direct and supervise the development and execution of integrated communications (marketing and/or public relations) efforts across all channels in support of key Police Department events, programs, issues and services.
Provide direct support and coach personnel in interacting and responding to the media, develop communication strategies, respond to emergencies and manage issues.
Develop pre-emptive crisis planning templates and lead all crisis communications. Drive comprehensive content development including informational campaigns on department issues and initiatives, press releases or similar communications.
Manage media relations and develops contacts with media members and community leaders.
Define, write and edit timely, relevant and effective communication to an array of stakeholders and use a variety of channels including, but not limited to: web copy, newsletter and magazine articles, speeches, news releases, official positions, message points, video scripts and correspondence.
Create and manage the department’s editorial, social media and events calendars.
Advise Chief on matters related to communications and public relations.
Supervise and oversee the work of assigned staff.
Oversee administration of all social media accounts.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.
Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.
Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.
