Instructor/Designer
Overview:
Serve as a key instructional resource under the USPTO’s Information Technology Resource Provider (ITRP) program, responsible for delivering high-quality, Section 508-compliant training and real-time support to Patent Examiners and staff on USPTO automation tools, desktop applications, and workflow systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver classroom, virtual, and one-on-one instruction using USPTO platforms including PE2E, Microsoft Office, MS Teams, and WebEx.
Provide helpdesk/chatroom support, live consultation, and “hotline” assistance on USPTO custom software and commercial tools.
Conduct needs-based training sessions on patent production pipeline processes and other mission-critical functions.
Support new examiner onboarding, continuing staff education, and remote learning engagement.
Maintain training databases (MS Access-based GUIs), schedule sessions, track attendance, and log instructional activities.
Participate in mock instruction sessions and receive approval before facilitating USPTO sessions.
Required Qualifications:
Prior experience training within the USPTO environment, particularly in Patent IT systems.
Demonstrated proficiency in teaching complex software applications.
Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility and USPTO brand/style guidelines.
Excellent verbal communication and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to support concurrent classes and backup instruction roles.
Education:
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree (preferred in Education, Instructional Technology, Computer Science, or related field)
Preferred: Master’s degree in a related discipline
Experience:
Instructor/Trainer I: Minimum 2 years of experience in IT training, adult education, or technical instruction
Instructor/Trainer II: Minimum 5 years of experience in IT training, adult education, or technical instruction
Instructor/Trainer III: 8+ years of progressive experience, including USPTO systems, software training, and classroom/virtual delivery
Must demonstrate previous USPTO experience or direct support of federal patent workflow systems like PE2E
