The Optician will dispense and fit spectacles, contact lenses and other optical aides, working from printed or computerized prescriptions with assistance. They will advise patients on various types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight, and color. Instructs patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and contacts.
Responsibilities
Provides patient education regarding lens materials, products, and designs
Performs prescription analysis such as interpreting and transposing
Provides recommendations to patients regarding proper eyeglass frame selection
Determines ideal recommendations by incorporating frame design, lens materials and optics with patient’s prescription and lifestyle considerations
Performs eyeglass frame adjustments and repairs. Includes proper alignment of frame, comfortable fit, functional vision and instructions on proper wear and care of eyeglasses
Performs accurate measurements of lens power, pupillary distance, multifocal segment height, lens base curve, vertex distance, and prism power
Orders custom lens products from identified vendors and monitors process to ensure on-time delivery and communicates any delays to patient
Post charges, patient and insurance claim payments and bill insurance when needed
Order contact lenses and/or trials
Verifies lens prescriptions of ordered lenses and checks for accuracy
Assists in the return of authorized merchandise to manufacturers
Design, arrange and maintain product displays
Monitors product inventory levels
Maintains inventory of office supplies and other materials necessary to properly run the department
Maintains instruments and hand tools used
Maintains job knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities and training
Ability to perform troubleshoot to determine cause for issues with new eyeglasses
Follows clinical workflow to ensure a clean hand-off from clinic to dispensary.
Work in cooperation with other dispensary associates to meet and exceed daily and monthly sales goals
Executes duties of position in a professional and courteous manner
Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner
Performs other tasks and duties as assigned
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required
Certification by American Board of Opticianry preferred
One to two years of retail optician experience required
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, staff, managers, and doctors
Understanding of the anatomy of the eye as well as normal, abnormal vision and perception
Basic computer literacy required
Excellent math skills that allow for precise work related to opticianry and sales (basic algebraic equations and monetary calculations)
