Applications Engineer
Location: Hoffman Estates, IL
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Classification: Non-Exempt
Travel: 25%–50%
Position Overview:
The Applications Engineer will support customer solutions by developing and implementing CNC machining strategies for complex parts. This role involves hands-on machine setup, part processing, and technical support, with regular collaboration across engineering, sales, and customer teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in application engineering projects under supervision of senior staff.
Participate in training programs offered internally and externally to build technical expertise.
Support test cuts, demonstrations, and turnkey projects by preparing workholding and fixturing.
Perform machining time studies and calculate optimal feeds and speeds for production efficiency.
Program CNC machines using a combination of conversational programming, CAM software, and G-code/Macro development.
Set up CNC machines with appropriate programs, tooling, workpieces, and fixturing.
Conduct quality inspections of machined parts to ensure dimensional accuracy.
Generate detailed technical documentation and engineering reports.
Communicate frequently with internal technical teams, external suppliers, and customer representatives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or related field) preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
2+ years of experience in CNC machining, programming, and part processing.
Strong understanding of metal cutting, machining principles, drawing interpretation, and machine setup.
Familiarity with metallurgical concepts and material behavior.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable interacting with both internal teams and external clients.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
