Coast Electric is looking for an Electrical Engineering Cooperative Assistant from a local University who is working to acquire a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power systems, controls, or communications. This position is accountable for assisting the Engineering Staff in planning, construction, and coordinating the operation of facilities for transmitting reliable power from distribution points to Members. The incumbent reports directly to a Sr. System Engineer who defines the priorities of the position.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the Engineering Co-op Assistant, you will participate in system analysis, load balancing, and sectionalizing studies. Also, participate in research feasibility studies in order to find efficient ways in which to improve the distribution system. Assist System Engineers in performing semi-annual load analysis to prepare for summer and winter peaks. Maintain and update sectionalizing device list. Perform field checks of the distribution system to ensure accurate data (including phasing, open point locations, sectionalizing device list) which is used by the GIS & Outage Management System. Responsible for necessary changes to each system.

Assist District Engineering Technicians and System Engineers with duties related to the work order design necessary for new construction, maintenance, and relocation of existing lines. Assist Engineering Staff in the design and implementation of the Construction Work Plan (CWP) and Long-Range Plan (LRP) to include: analyze existing and projected loads to determine necessary upgrades, prepare documentation for CWP & LRP, assist in compiling all information into RUS format, create and prepare documentation for bidding process, create work orders and reconcile construction changes, assist with obtaining permits and easements for work plan construction, and track construction cost and compile close out documentation. Assist with special Engineering projects as requested by supervisor. Submit weekly reports of activities to supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must be working to acquire a BSEE from an accredited university with emphasis in power systems, controls, or communications.

Must be enrolled in an accredited engineering program and in the school's cooperative education program. Must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Must be able to acquire within a reasonable time span, a sound knowledge of the principles and practices used in the construction operation and maintenance of a rural electric distribution system, including RUS construction specifications, National Electric Code and National Electrical Safety Code.

Must acquire a working knowledge of the installation, operation, and maintenance of meters, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, sectionalizers, oil circuit breakers, substations, etc.

Must possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, achieve a high level of accuracy and productivity, and be able to manage multiple tasks without supervision.

Must possess a high level of integrity, strong work ethic, be self-directed, and highly motivated.

Must have the ability to identify problem areas and seek solutions that will alleviate these problems.

Must be proficient with the use of personal computers, spreadsheets, calculators, word processing software, and distribution analysis software.

Must possess excellent communication skills, including active listening as well as verbal and written skills.
