Job Title: Apprentice Plant Engineer
Location: Waukegan, IL
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire (6-month contract with strong potential for full-time hire)
Schedule: Monday–Friday 6:00 AM–2:00 PM or 7:00 AM–3:00 PM Some OT and off-hours required

Are you a hands-on problem solver with an electrical background and a passion for continuous improvement? This is your chance to build a long-term career in a recession-proof industry, with opportunities for travel and advancement across a nationwide network of facilities.
We're looking for an Apprentice Plant Engineer who’s ready to get in on the ground floor of a high-impact role supporting plant operations, capital improvement projects, and engineering initiatives in a heavy industrial setting.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out:
Work alongside an experienced Plant Engineer with over 15 years at the company
Pathway to future plant leadership roles across a national network of manufacturing sites
Strong team culture rooted in loyalty, mentorship, and collaboration
Access to benefits like tuition reimbursement and career development after full-time hire
Role Overview:
As an Apprentice Plant Engineer, you’ll support ongoing capital projects and process improvements related to plant equipment and systems—both mechanically and electrically. You’ll work cross-functionally with production and maintenance teams, applying your troubleshooting skills and project mindset to keep operations running smoothly.
While this is a first-shift role, availability for off-shift support (evenings and weekends) is essential, especially during production breakdowns or high-demand periods.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with equipment upgrades, installations, and system improvements
Troubleshoot electrical systems and contribute to minor PLC adjustments
Support continuous improvement (CI) efforts across plant processes
Collaborate with maintenance and production teams to ensure operational efficiency
Participate in training and mentoring under the Plant Engineer
Be on-call for urgent issues that may arise during nights or weekends
Must-Have Qualifications:
2+ years of hands-on experience in an industrial setting
Strong electrical aptitude, including wiring, conduit installation, and system troubleshooting
Familiarity with PLC troubleshooting (GMP, ladder logic, basic edits)
Comfortable with off-shift and weekend work when needed
Self-motivated and eager to solve problems independently and cross-functionally
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of relevant experience or equivalent hands-on skill level
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field
Exposure to HMI software such as Wonderware, Intellution, or ISIX
Experience in industrial engineering, maintenance engineering, or plant operations
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to grow into a leadership role, not just fill a job. If you enjoy being hands-on, solving complex problems, and working in a tight-knit team that values growth and autonomy, we want to hear from you.
