Part I: Summary of Position
The lead safety assistant supports district-wide safety initiatives by overseeing and guiding safety assistants, maintaining a secure school environment, and fostering positive relationships with students, staff, and visitors. This position ensures adherence to district behavioral expectations, monitors facilities and entry points, intervenes in crisis situations, and models professional conduct. Reporting to building-level administration, this role also collaborates closely with the Director of Crisis and Safety to support emergency readiness and personnel training.
Part II: Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A. Education and Experience
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate
Two (2) years of full-time employment or equivalent experience that aligns to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below
OR
Meet one of the following four options:
Completed 50 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education
Obtained an associate's degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
Met a formal state assessment by ONE of the following means:
Passed the ETS ParaPro assessment (460 or higher)
Passed the applicable ACT WorkKeys assessment:
Applied Math – 4
Reading for Information – 4
Writing/Business Writing – 3
“Acceptable” on the Instructional Support Inventory
Met state paraprofessional approval PLUS 300 Professional Training Points (PTPs)
B. Credentials
Candidates may be required to possess a current Illinois Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License
Candidates may be required to have CPR and First Aid certification
C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of student behavioral frameworks such as PBIS and RTI
Understanding of safety protocols, emergency response, and de-escalation strategies
Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to school safety and student conduct
Ability to assess and respond to safety threats quickly and calmly
Strong written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences
Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students from diverse backgrounds
Skill in maintaining confidentiality and ethical practices in student interactions
Capability to guide and support peer safety assistants and mentor new hires
Competency in managing and analyzing incident data and completing reports
Ability to remain composed under pressure and make quick, sound decisions
Proficiency with school surveillance systems and visitor management protocols
Physical capacity to intervene in crises and navigate campus environments
Ability to apply conflict resolution and restorative practices with students
Organizational skills to manage assignments, schedules, and documentation
Technological proficiency in district-required software and safety applications
Part III: Essential Functions

Monitor school premises, entries, hallways, and grounds to ensure a safe environment
Supervise safety assistants, provide field coaching, and coordinate daily assignments
Serve as the point of contact for safety incidents, escalating as needed to administration
De-escalate student conflicts and provide immediate response during emergencies
Communicate behavioral expectations and school policies to students and visitors
Assist in enforcement of building-level and district-wide behavior protocols
Escort students and visitors, ensuring safety and proper authorization at all times
Operate and monitor surveillance and visitor management systems
Track attendance patterns (e.g., tardiness, truancy) and intervene when appropriate
Document incidents, interventions, and safety concerns in required formats
Issue visitor passes and enforce trespassing and entry procedures
Participate in safety audits, drills, and the review of emergency protocols
Maintain required certifications (CPI, CPR, ALICE, etc.); assist with training delivery
Collaborate with the Director of Crisis and Safety to support district-wide initiatives
Train new safety personnel on procedures, software, and expectations
Provide support during arrival/dismissal and assist with bus supervision
Observe and report suspicious behavior or unauthorized individuals
Serve as a liaison between students and staff to support positive school climate
Testify in hearings or proceedings related to school safety matters, as needed
Attend professional development and remain current on best practices and tools
Part IV: Supervision
Other building safety assistants; no evaluation required.
