Role Overview
At Emporia Energy, hardware products are the tip of the spear - attracting customers, fueling data analytics, and enabling demand response through integration with Emporia's energy management platform. We provide our customers with reliable, high-value add products at industry-leading pricing.
We are looking for a passionate Principal Power Electronics and Controls Architect to help us expand the Emporia Energy hardware ecosystem – initially by working on bringing our upcoming Bidirectional EV Charger to market. Work will involve owning control loop design and verification for both AC/DC and DC/DC power converters and contributing to needed V2G, G2V, and V2H hardware and control designs. As a senior member of the Hardware Development team, the ideal candidate will be expected to work closely with peers on this cross disciplinary project and provide mentorship to mid and junior level engineers on the team as needed. Throughout, they will demonstrate the strong analysis, design, and test skills required to produce the reliable, low-cost hardware that our customers expect.
Responsibilities
Act as the primary technical expert for bidirectional 10-100 kW level AC/DC and DC/DC power electronics hardware and control systems at all stages of design and validation
Provide power electronics hardware expertise to lower-level power electronics engineers, specifically for a bidirectional dual-active bridge architecture
Support other power related projects as needed
Own and mentor control loop design and validation for bidirectional AC/DC and DC/DC power converters
Develop prototype firmware for hardware bring up and testing while working with our established firmware team to mature and transition these efforts into production
Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing and other electrical engineers as needed
Support the transition from new product development into high volume manufacturing
Assist in developing production line testing of the systems you developed when needed
Work closely with a team of passionate engineers to ensure we develop exceptional hardware products – participate and/or lead design reviews and trades as needed or lend a hand with testing and debug as required. We are a small team requiring a high level of collaboration and teamwork to ensure we achieve our goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
10+ years of experience developing power electronics for products
Experience developing digital control systems for grid tied inverters, rectifiers, and DC/DC converters using microcontroller platforms
Experience developing hardware for power electronics, including topology selection, switching device selection, magnetics design and sensing network design
Experience with modeling and simulation-aided analysis for control loop design
Strong understanding of power converter theory and design
Familiar with coding/scripting language such as Python and C, or equivalent
Electrical hardware lab equipment familiarity
Demonstrated experience managing workload and project deliverables
Strong writing, interpersonal, and communication skills
Desired Skills & Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering or related field
Working knowledge of V2G and G2V related regulations in North America as they relate to the design of grid interactive power converters
Bidirectional inverter design experience for North American grid tied applications
Working knowledge of renewable energy related concepts such as home energy storage systems, general power conversion/regulation/distribution, and power fault protection
Experience writing embedded software for the STM32 family of microcontrollers
Experience designing and debugging for electrical and safety compliance standards such as FCC, CE, UL/ETL, etc.
Experience designing and shipping high-volume consumer products
