Yard Supervisor

Job Description

We are looking for an energetic and safety-conscious individual who has several years of work experience and is ready to grow with a fast-paced intermodal trucking and transloading company. This person has longshoreman/warehouse yard type experience and has worked with cargo, including project, breakbulk, and shipping cargo containers. This person must be a quick learner and adept at solving transloading problems. We are looking for a self-starter, someone who sees problems and things to be done and addresses them quickly. This person will have excellent communication skills to work well with internal staff, other yard workers, and customers and clients. The successful candidate will be a jack-of-all-trades and lead a yard/warehouse team by setting a great example in work ethic and safety standards.

General duties:

· Arrive at work by 8:00 am and prepare for the day’s activities. Stay until customer loads are completed, per the daily schedule

· Organize customer shipments coming into and leaving our yard for ports and rail lines; work with the Terminal Manager on scheduling equipment and workers based on estimated daily workloads

· Supervise and prepare customer cargo for transport and shipment – steps could include: palletize, shrink wrap, add lot identifiers, strap and chain heavy loads, and rig cargo containers

· Ensure compliance with company warehouse, OSHA, and environmental procedures, and with local, state, and federal safety and material handling regulations

· Receive and manage deliveries for transloading cargo containers; inspect for quality and organize the inventory of customer goods

· Communicate effectively with the Terminal Manager, owners, other employees, customers, carrier management and drivers, contractors and vendors, and state and Federal officials so that all necessary parties are fully apprised of situations

· Maintain a safe workplace and respond to any hazardous conditions; implement immediate clean-up plan

· Operate forklifts and other yard and warehouse equipment in a safe and efficient manner, making sure cargo is placed correctly, properly rigged and/or strapped/chained, and moved

• Maintain and organize repairs for company vehicles and equipment, including forklifts, cranes, welding and warehouse material handling equipment, fire extinguisher inspections, tractor, truck, and trailer inspections and maintenance

• Assist with onboarding and mentoring new workers, and other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

· Experience with transloading cargo, trucking, port operations, breakbulk, heavy and out of gauge project cargo

· High school diploma or GED, previous warehouse/yard experience; some college is a plus

· Supervisory experience in a similar work environment

· Ability to think and make quick, smart decisions

· Proactive, positive approach to the company, the position, and daily work

· Understand OSHA compliance and HAZMAT requirements

· Forklift experience and certification is required

· Must be able to physically stand, sit, move, squat, walk, and climb during the course of the shift

· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more

· Occasional night and/or weekend work will be needed

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Able to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities

· Able to think, plan, and work independently; critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities

· Must follow all health and safety procedures and regulations as dictated by the organization and the Federal and state authorities

· Inventory management/job control experience

Our warehouse and storage yard are located a few miles from the Virginia International Gateway port, in Portsmouth VA. We handle all types of cargo, including overweight, breakbulk, out of gauge, and over-dimensional.
