Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to Parnall located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
Consumers Energy Company’s Environmental Quality and Sustainability (EQ&S) Department (Department) is a team of professionals who provide planning, permitting and operational compliance support for electric and natural gas utility operations serving approximately 6 million customers in Michigan. The Department’s Air Quality Section is seeking an Environmental Analyst / Engineer to support the company’s environmental compliance programs, focusing primarily compliance with the air permits at both our fossil fuel-fired generation and natural gas compressor sites in Michigan. The successful candidate will have a background in air permitting for utility operations and strong relationships with state and federal environmental agencies, as well as evaluating regulations for applicability determinations for Company-wide projects associated with electric and natural gas utility operations. The successful candidate will join a team who routinely collaborate with internal business partners and other EQ&S staff.
The Environmental Engineer is responsible for designing technology to assist in environmental conservation, evaluating land to determine the impact of commercial activity, and advising policymakers on environmental best practices, among other duties. The incumbent will find creative design solutions to pressing environmental problems and ensure compliance with regulations related to water, air, soil, and other types of pollution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Site assessments for industrial, commercial, or residential sites for environmental impact of the activity
Field observation and field sample collections
Use of specialized equipment to test soil, water, and air of a construction area
Responsible for reclamation and disposal of air, water and land
Identify better solutions for site cleanup on a construction site
Improve environmental conservation management, including recycling, public health, water, and air pollution
Design technology for pollution control and waste management
Evaluate current systems and design innovative ways to improve or replace the existing systems or processes
Act as a regulatory arm for the companies compliance with waste disposal and management
Consult and advise policymakers on environmental best practices
Develop guidelines for the disposal of hazardous materials
Pollution-control and waste treatment planning
Investigate, record, and compile reports for environmental-related complaints/investigations
Undertake environmental protection projects such as designing air pollution management systems

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with two (2) or more years of environmental engineering concepts and regulations
[OR] Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering licensure with two (2) or more years of environmental engineering concepts and regulations
Preferred Experience
Master’s Degree in a relevant field or discipline
Proficiency in computer applications applicable to specific work field/discipline, including Microsoft Word and Excel
Ability to be self-motivated to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and assignments
Can make systematic decisions and decisions under pressure, build a consensus, make difficult/unpopular decisions, ability to consider impact of decisions while working to minimize negative impacts
Works well in groups and with individuals on all levels within and outside the company
Strong written, oral, and communication skills
Established relationships with state and federal permitting agencies
Electric generation/distribution and gas utility experience; preferably knowledge of natural gas-fired generation, compressor station site operation, and related air quality control equipment
A background in other air quality subjects, such as asbestos and refrigerants
Experience and knowledge of GHG accounting protocols: Scope 1, 2 and 3
A background in working with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems, including 40 CFR Part 75 and Part 60 reporting and related Data Acquisition and Handling software
A background in Federal Acid Rain, Cross State Air Pollution Rule – NOx/Sulfur Dioxide Trading Programs
Experience in reviewing, commenting, and influencing emerging air quality regulations
Experience in auditing air quality programs
Familiarity with compliance-based software systems, such as DevonWay software
Experience in the preparation and management of air quality permit applications, documentation of exemptions, implementation of new regulatory requirements and/or permit requirements
Experience in air dispersion modeling for air permitting
