* Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks required and PDM nice to have): designing parts with complex geometry, creating assemblies, creating detailed manufacturing drawings, and examining designs with Finite Element Analysis (FEA). * Experience with driving a design to closure while weighing the compromise of cost, schedule and risk * Technical expertise with mechanical system design is required, with a preferable focus on robotics and/or medical products Preferred: * Exposure to full product development lifecycle including ideation, design, debug, verification, qualification, transfer to manufacturing, and sustaining * General understanding of medical device development process, design control, design verification * General understanding of relevant standards such as ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and IEC 60601 is desirable We believe the future of the operating room lies in the hands of the empowered surgeon.

As a flexible member of the R&D hardware team you will lead individual projects spanning the capital equipment and the consumables at the direction of the senior members of the team: * Develop improvements and new versions of our capital equipment, and support the sustaining activities of our system.
* Design, prototype, refine and develop the structural components, mechatronics, mechanisms and cosmetic aspects of our capital equipment.
* Establish key results for mechanical systems that align with, and move the company toward, it's goal.
* Manage and Plan timelines and the individual tasks required to achieve them * Communicate effectively to the R&D management team the plans for progress toward achieving these key results * Show patience, respect and focus to discuss trade offs and engage in healthy debate with the broader team * Prototype concepts for rapid iteration and testing in both benchtop and pre-clinical settings * Provide hands-on troubleshooting during prototyping and through commercial implementation in support of rapid design cycles and tight feedback loops * Contribute to and lead technical design reviews and support or author essential design control document elements such as requirements, design outputs, and risk analysis, throughout the design and development process * Work closely with cross-functional teams (Systems, Electrical, Software, Clinical) to ensure interfaces are understood and requirements defined.
* Generate Invention Disclosures in support of the company's patent strategy and participate in patent application drafting as appropriate * Ensure compliance with relevant aspects of the IEC-60601, and other standards On a daily basis you will be fully immersed in the design and development of the Maestro Platform, as a flexible member spanning 3 groups System Design, Arms, and Consumables..
You will be a key member of the team helping us increase our design improvement throughput and sustaining activities.
* Additionally, you will be the primary technical resource for mechanical design topics related to sustaining activities.
* You will have complete design ownership of any project that comes your way from beginning to implementation.
* Your work will expand from dynamic and fast, to long term projects.
* You will be reporting to our CTO who will provide guidance and management on your short-, mid-, and long-term projects within the organization through weekly 1-1 meetings.
* On a daily basis, you will be in contact with all team members globally, on an as-needed basis, with frequent interactions cross functional resources.
With national and international travel on an as-needed basis.
* You will be working with input and support from our internal teams R&D, Product, Marketing, Clinical, Operations, and external vendors/consultants.
* The whole company meets globally a few times a year, and you will rapidly have an opportunity to meet everyone in involved.
* Demonstrated experience in structural design, integration of motion control components, mechanism design, and electronic packaging * Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of manufacturing processes, machining, sheet metal, and surface treatments (coatings, painting, etc.) * Exploration skills for mechanical analysis and testing, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, stress, fatigue, thermal, and reliability * Some experience in plastic part design including cast urethane and injection molding.
* Component selection and design for reliability and manufacturability * Design, manufacture and troubleshooting of electromechanical components and assemblies including brushless DC motors, brakes, bearings, gears, ball screws, linear actuators, encoders and other sensors * Release designs following good documentation principles and configuration control methods * Knowledge of failure analysis * Working knowledge in ASME Y14.5 GD&T and tolerance stack analysis * Demonstrated knowledge for electro-mechanical component selection and integration of cabling and harnessing.
Ability to make your own cabling using crimping and soldering tools.
* Ability to bring up electro-mechanical designs on a benchtop for initial functional testing and verification of functionality.
Such as voltage, spin tests, and sensor checks with limited supervision.
* Experience with prototyping and quick iterative design solutions such as 3D printing, fabrication, manual part modifications for fit checks.
* Comfortable operating machine shop equipment, measurement and test equipment * Structured Problem Solving.
Rational thinking and root cause analysis capability.
