Principal Automation Engineer
SMS group Inc. seeks a Principal Automation Engineer to work in Pittsburgh, PA, and be responsible for overseeing the commissioning, design, and development of SMS' proprietary flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems. Specific duties will include: (i) developing automation systems and ensuring that the proper requirements are met for the commissioning and operation of flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems; (ii) communicating with customers before and during project execution to determine technology requirements and objectives and implementing appropriate digital solutions; (iii) inspecting and coordinating the installation of flat rolling mill and galvanizing line equipment and ensuring these meet specifications and requirements; (iv) overseeing the verification of proper installation progress, sequence, quality, and protocol compliance; (v) preparing error and correction lists during commissioning and start-up activities for flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems; (vi) creating assembly and commissioning protocols for flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems; (vii) instituting acceptance test plans; (viii) programming system visualization and controls according to specifications; (ix) supervising and instructing assembly staff in mounting and aligning of flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems; (x) advising client on product requirements and customizations of flat rolling mill equipment and technology, specifically its automation systems; and (xi) providing related protocols and measuring data/records.
Must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or a directly related field, AND at least five (5) years of experience in an electrical and electronics engineering role. Experience must include five (5) years of: (i) supporting team as a technical expert for processes (hot and cold rolling) for all project life cycles (sales, development, commissioning and support); (ii) interfacing and communicating with local project team (project managers, engineers, support personnel) and internal experts from other areas as well as customers suppliers to provide engineering solutions to technical issues and project-related matters; (iii) developing and implementing automation control systems that include motion control, advanced sensors, VFD drives and actuators; (iv) completing sophisticated assignments requiring development of new and/or improved engineering techniques and procedures; (v) leading flat rolling sequencing; (vi) developing hot and cold rolling processing for steel manufacturing; (vii) implementing the principles of shaping metals through rolling (both hot and cold rolling) using metals rolling processes; (viii) using flatness control techniques to ensure product flatness during processing; (ix) using methods for accurately measuring and controlling material thickness; (x) adjusting and optimizing models for performance improvement; (xi) managing tension in the rolling process to prevent defects; (xii) calculating the diameter of rolling products; (xiii) planning the sequence of operations in the rolling process; (xiv) coordinating the operation of supporting machinery for auxiliary equipment sequencing; (xv) ensuring the rolling oil quality of lubricants used in rolling processes; (xvi) controlling rolling temperatures during processing to optimize results; (xvii) implementing and managing automated system networks and their communication; (xviii) overseeing the entire flow of materials through production stages including casting to packing lines; and (xix) identifying rolling line problems, analyzing their causes, and implementing effective solutions.
Must be able and willing to travel domestically up to 15% to various unanticipated client locations. Must undergo and pass a pre-employment background check in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
