Scope of Position
The Surgical Technologist functions as an integral member of a team of care providers on a patient care unit who reflect a culture of
cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC-RN), Anesthesia Technician (AT)
and the Unit Clerical Associate (UCA) provides patient care and supportive services that are directed toward successful achievement of
patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in his/her own plan of care, improving services levels, reducing the length of
hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient focus care through the integrated skills
of all care team members.
Position Summary
The Surgical Technologist (ST) is an unclassified professional staff position. The ST works under the general supervision of the Surgeon and
the direct supervision of the Surgical Tech Manager; performing technical skills related to intraoperative patient care, using established
nursing policies and procedures. The ST performs direct and indirect perioperative nursing tasks for pediatric and adult patients having
surgical and endoscopy procedures. The primary focus of this position is the scrub person role.
The ST performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and
certification requirements upholds Nursing Services philosophy and objectives, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates
career growth and development. The ST works rotating shifts as assigned. Call is assigned on a rotating basis.
All employees entering this position shall receive orientation to The University Hospitals system and The James Operating Rooms.
Orientation will include the role, duties, and responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: High school diploma and satisfactory completion of a recognized training program for operating room technician or an equivalent
combination of education and experience is required.
