The Opportunity:
Our client is seeking an experienced, dynamic accounting professional to join its financial management team. This role offers a unique opportunity for a skilled candidate to shape the organization’s future and make a meaningful impact on the future of this technical association. The Controller will play a critical role in driving the organization's financial success in collaboration with the Director of Finance.
The Position:
As Controller, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality financial reports, managing financial staff, maintaining compliance with financial regulations, and ensuring the accuracy of accounting transactions. This position requires a proactive and hands-on approach to working with complex financial data, audits, and budgets. You will report directly to the Director of Finance and contribute to the organization’s financial strategy and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis – Prepare and analyze financial statements, perform variance analysis, and provide insights for strategic decision-making.
Budgeting & Forecasting – Assist in developing budgets, analyzing variances, and recommending cost controls.
Audit & Compliance – Support internal and external audits, ensure compliance with GAAP/IFRS, and maintain financial controls.
Month-End Close – Oversee reconciliations, journal entries, and ensure accurate financial data.
Tax & Regulatory Filings – Assist with tax returns and regulatory compliance.
Financial Systems & Process Improvement – Identify efficiency improvements and support financial system implementations.
Manage Financial Staff – Hire, train, and lead a high-performing financial team.
Special Projects – Support strategic initiatives, including business development and financial analysis.
Desired Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate thorough knowledge of and be highly skilled in financial reporting and record keeping, annual budgeting, cash flow management, external auditing, and reporting. In addition, the ideal candidate should be highly skilled in interpersonal communications, relationship development, change leadership, and task delegation. The Controller should possess superior leadership skills in the management, motivation, and development of professional staff.
Qualifications:
A college degree in accounting or finance, or a combination of academic study and experience. A CPA designation is a plus, but not required.
5-8+ years of accounting/finance experience with GAAP expertise, grant accounting and fund management experience.
Experienced in financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance (GAAP/IFRS knowledge preferred).
Skilled in managing financial systems and process improvements.
A strong leader with experience hiring, training, and managing financial staff.
Detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive in problem-solving.
Able to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Strong creative skills to develop new and innovative solutions.
Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities.
Comfort and ability to clearly explain and interpret reports and budgets to non-financial staff and board members.
Proficiency in financial software (Excel, QuickBooks, and more).
Nonprofit experience a plus.
