Database Administrator
Position shift: 10am-6pm
As a member of a database administration team, the successful candidate will be a critical expert in managing, maintaining, and optimizing the DB2 database environment within a diverse database landscape, including exposure to AWS cloud services.
The candidate will play a key role in ensuring the performance, reliability, and security of the DB2 systems, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to support the P&C insurance operations.
This role requires a strong focus on DB2 administration, performance tuning, and problem resolution, with an understanding of other database platforms like Oracle, SQL Server, and cloud-based solutions, and specifically how they may interact with AWS.
This position requires 4 days onsite per week. Production on-call support, maintenance, and off-hour deployments are required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
DB2 Administration:
Install, configure, and maintain DB2 LUW databases in an AIX environment.
Perform database backups, restores, and recovery operations.
Implement and manage database security, including user access control and auditing.
Monitor DB2 performance and proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
Perform database maintenance tasks, including reorgs, runstats, and rebinding.
Manage database storage and capacity planning.
Implement and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions for DB2.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex DB2 database issues.
Maintain in place IBM Q Replication.
Performance Tuning and Optimization:
Analyze query performance and implement indexing strategies to improve efficiency.
Tune SQL queries and database parameters for optimal performance.
Conduct performance testing and identify areas for improvement.
Database Design and Development Support:
Collaborate with developers to design and implement efficient database schemas.
Provide guidance on SQL query optimization and best practices.
Assist with the creation and maintenance of database objects (tables, views, stored procedures, etc.).
AWS and Cross-Platform Awareness:
Maintain a working knowledge of Oracle and SQL Server database administration, including reorg and update statistics procedures.
Have experience or understanding of how DB2 can integrate with AWS services, such as AWS DMS for data migration, or how data from DB2 can be utilized by AWS analytical services.
Familiarity with AWS database services (RDS, DocumentDB, DynamoDB) and how they may be used in conjunction with on-premise DB2.
Understand data replication concepts and tools.
Understand Cloud database offerings.
General Responsibilities:
Participate in production on-call support and off-hour deployments.
Document database procedures and configurations.
Collaborate with software development, security, and data warehouse teams.
Proactively identify and resolve database issues.
Analyze and recommend hardware/software improvements, including potential cloud migrations.
User level familiarity with version control tools.
Qualifications and Education:
Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience as a DB2 LUW DBA, preferably in an AIX environment.
Strong knowledge of DB2 utilities, including backup, restore, reorg, runstats, and rebind.
Proven experience in DB2 performance tuning and query optimization.
Experience with DB2 security and access control.
Understanding of Oracle and SQL Server administration tasks.
Demonstrated understanding or experience with AWS cloud services, particularly in relation to database administration and data migration.
Experience with AWS DMS or other data migration tools is highly desirable.
Familiarity with AWS database services (RDS, DocumentDB, DynamoDB).
Experience with data replication concepts.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Experience using a Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of the Property and Casualty Insurance industry is a plus.
Prior experience migrating databases from an on-prem data center to the cloud is preferred.
Ability to work onsite 4 days a week – NJ.
