Summary Description
Under general supervision or direction, is responsible for the careful and safe operation of a variety of heavy/light motorized equipment; responsible for the care and maintenance of city streets and sewers; responsible for the care and maintenance of public parks and city land and facilities; performs other related duties as required. This is a safety-sensitive position.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Operate snow plows, tractor mowers, dump trucks, salt spreader, pickup truck, front-end loader, paint machines, rodding machine, sanitation truck, backhoe, street sweeper, and road roller
Haul stone, dirt, asphalt, salt and other street materials
Help load and unload trucks
When not engaged in the operation of one of the vehicles listed above, may be required to dig ditches, do rough carpentry work
Rake asphalt
Cut brush
Repair streets, curbs, catch basins, broken sewer and water lines
Operate pumps
Seal cracks in concrete and asphalt
Install traffic control signs
Pour and finish concrete surfaces
Install sewer and water lines
Repair electrical lines
Repair motors
Trim and/or remove trees on City property and easements
Remove leaves from the City streets
Maintain parks and other public areas
Maintain public buildings
Collect and deposit solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables
Complies with federal drug testing requirements
Maintains licenses and certifications as required, if any
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions
May work irregular, on-call, and/or emergency hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Weekend and evening schedule will be posted prior to each pay period
Employee will be compensated for emergency hours with either flexing of schedule with the supervisor, or taking comp time or overtime pay
May repair, clean, and perform general maintenance on equipment used
May be required to prepare reports of work performed, payroll reports as required by the Director of Service, or other related office procedures as required
Provide support to department/City-sponsored activities, including but not limited to: special events, workshops, training, special meetings, and exhibitionsEQUIPMENT USED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive.
Motor vehicle
Heavy machinery, including but not limited to sanitation truck, dump truck, snow plow, Cushman, cherry-picker, tree shredder, lawn mower, chain saw, backhoe, rodding machine, paint machine
Variety of power and hand tools
May be required to be certified to use certain equipment
Personal protective equipment, such as helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, and safety harness
Two-way radioPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The essential functions of this position require the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, and grasping
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
Visual acuity is required for color perception, night vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities

Education & Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent
Some experience in operating any one or more of the equipment listed in this specification
Possession of a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license
Possession of a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver’s (CDL) within six (6) months of hire dateQUALIFICATIONS: (* indicates developed after employment).
Knowledge of:
The operating principles of gasoline-powered, diesel-powered, and natural gas-powered vehicles and equipment
Parts that comprise a gasoline and diesel motor and the ability to identify those parts
The particular problems involved in the operation of light/heavy equipment as distinguished from equipment operation/passenger-car operation
Building, street, and grounds maintenance methods, tools, materials, and supplies
Knowledge of state and local motor vehicle lawsSkill in:
