Exempt/Non-exempt Exempt Status Full time The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is currently recruiting for the position of Systems Engineer.

The purpose of this position is provide administration, management, and support across the City's various systems, technologies, and data platforms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position.

These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

Other duties may be required and assigned.

Primary duties include designing, testing and maintaining desktop/notebook operating system environment, building automated software images, working with vendors to evaluate and acquire standardized hardware/software to streamline support, managing our server/SAN/BCDR infrastructure, and administering our Microsoft 365 tenant.

Managing our server/SAN/BCDR infrastructure includes creating/maintaining user e-mail accounts; user/departmental file shares; daily review of backup, server, IT security, and other system logs; restoring data; monitoring system performance and availability; and troubleshooting server/SAN/M365 system problems.

Additional responsibilities include providing backup for end user support staff and being an escalation point for assisting them with troubleshooting difficult issues, and installation/maintenance of newly introduced hardware software systems.

Must have thorough understanding and technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows Server and desktop operating systems, Microsoft 365, microcomputer hardware, and other common peripherals in a Microsoft Windows environment.

Responsible for the administration, support, planning, and engineering of the City's various applications and systems.

Provides day-to-day support on various City servers and data systems.

Manages a work order queue and works directly with end users on escalated problems.

Diagnoses and resolves problems associated with various City servers and storage area networks.

Diagnoses and resolves problems associated with City software and applications and ensures scalability and appropriate integration with other systems.

Assists in assessing and prioritizing information technology needs.

Provides input to long range capital improvement plan and implementation strategies.

Assists with budget requests for computer hardware and software.

Provides technical advice and assistance.

Assists and monitors record keeping for warranties and service contracts and inventory.

Performs system configuration and performance maintenance routines.

Conducts special projects as needed or directed.

Assists in budget expenditures with respect to computer equipment, software, etc.

Maintains knowledge of a wide variety of computer hardware and software applications and operations and procurement rules and regulations.

Other duties as assigned Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Advanced knowledge of modern Microsoft Server and Desktop Operating Systems, Active Directory, Azure, Exchange, and M365 applications.

Knowledgeable in web application support, troubleshooting, and administration.

Knowledgeable in general systems administration and modern networking practices.

Knowledgeable in modern security practices, tools, and hardware.

Knowledgeable in modern backup and DR solutions.

Background in managing Cisco and Meraki networking devices preferred.

Background in managing EDR tools, firewalls, and email security systems preferred.

Four-year degree in related field or equivalent formal technical education is required with six to eight years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Must have thorough understanding and technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, Microsoft Windows 10 11, and Microsoft Office products; working knowledge of networking protocols (TCP, UDP, IP, RIP, ICMP, SNMP, RMON, H.232, SIP, etc.), 802.11 ac/ax/be wireless networks; and have experience with one or more Microsoft BackOffice components (SQL Server, Exchange, IIS, etc). Must be able to demonstrate mature problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work independently performing tasks and solving problems in an environment of changing priorities and emergencies.

Must convey a professional image, have strong customer service skills, and have excellent written verbal communication ability with experience creating technical documentation.
