Job Description
Columbia University, School of Professional Studies (SPS) seeks candidates to serve as a part-time Lecturer to teach a graduate level course in Storytelling with Data.
Data does not have meaning without context and interpretation. This course teaches students how to effectively present data analytics by developing and delivering a compelling narrative that has been tailored a with a specific audience in mind. Throughout the course, students create and receive feedback on data storytelling while sharpening their ability to communicate complex analytics to technical and nontechnical audiences with clarity, precision, and influence.
Responsibilities
Lead class lectures, instructional activities, and classroom discussion. Attend all class sessions (classes generally meet once per week for up to 2 hours).
Prepare instructional materials, including the oversight of the course Canvas webpage (learning management system), weekly lecture presentations, supplementary class readings, etc.
Monitor and address student concerns and inquiries.
Evaluate, grade student work and assessments.
Conduct office hours.
Qualifications
Columbia University SPS operates under a scholar-practitioner faculty model, which enables students to learn from faculty possessing outstanding academic training as well as a record of accomplishment as practitioners in an applied industry setting.
Requirements
Doctoral degree or equivalent required, in a disciplinary area related to data science and a focus on data visualization, visual perception, and strategic communication.
Proven ability to design and deliver compelling, data-driven narratives.
Professional experience and demonstrated success in communicating visually with data.
Preferred Skills & Experience
10+ years of professional experience in a role related to working with external clients such as Consulting, Marketing/Advertising firms, or Customer/Business Development teams
2+ years of University teaching experience, ideally at the graduate level.
