Upper Limb Research Engineer

Embla Medical (Össur) is seeking an ambitious person to join the Neuromuscular Technology team within Research & Development to work on research projects targeting upper-limb prosthetic applications.

The person in question should be proficient in C/C++ programming for embedded systems and have a strong understanding of real-time control systems, signal processing, and motor control algorithms.

The person will be part of a strong team of experts working towards common goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Support neuromuscular research projects targeting upper-limb prosthetic applications.

Design, implement and qualify real-time control algorithms across the software/firmware stack, e.g. end-application, motion controls, actuator controls, etc.

Develop test cases and participate in tests with device users.

Identify, specify, and integrate hardware components such as sensors, actuators or other wearable device componentry in platforms or prototypes to evaluate their performance and explore new features.

Interact with upper-limb prosthetic product development team through activities such as technology transfer, collaborative projects and knowledge dissemination.

Develop, test, troubleshoot and qualify embedded firmware to support technology exploration and maturation.

Monitor and evaluate technology progression in and out of field and its applicability to current and future upper-limb prosthetic applications.

Maintain thorough project documentation of the design, development, and testing processes.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Embedded Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Proficiency in C/C++ programming for embedded systems.

Strong understanding of real-time control systems, signal processing, and motor control algorithms.

Preferred Qualifications:

3+ years of experience in upper-limb prosthetic research and/or development.

Hands-on experience in hardware-in-the-loop development and tools (debugging tools, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers).

Demonstrated experience and know-how with biosignals acquisition, processing and integration in end-use applications.

Familiarity with communication protocols and technology (e.g. UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Bluetooth, BLE, NFC, etc.).

Experience with microcontrollers (e.g. Tiva C Series).

Knowledge of machine learning or AI integration in embedded systems.

Experience in medical device development.

Familiarity with compliance and regulatory standards for medical devices.

Excellent problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.

The position is located either in Iceland or in Livingston, Scotland.
