Job Description
A 40+ year AISC- Certified structural steel fabricator and erector based in Michigan. We support major commercial and industrial projects across the region. We are seeking a skilled Controller to manage our financial operations and help drive strategic decisions in accounting and project cost oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Direct and manage all daily accounting activities, including general ledger, AP/AR, bank reconciliations, and month- end close
Prepare detailed WIP (Work- in- Progress) reports, analyze job performance, and track under/ over billings
Oversee AIA billing, lien waivers, insurance compliance, and payment tracking
Manage certified and union payroll reporting, including fringe benefit calculations
Work closely with project managers and estimators to monitor job cost performance, change orders, and forecast accuracy
Support bonding and financial statement preparation for surety requirements
Maintain compliance with GAAP, construction- specific accounting standards, and internal controls
Drive accounting process improvements and help integrate technology across financial systems
Assist leadership with strategic planning, budgeting, and financial forecasting
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in a Accounting, Finance or related field
CPA/CMA designation preferred but not required
Minimum 5 years of experience in construction accounting, preferably within structural steel or heavy construction
Deep understanding of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and revenue recognition (Percentage-of- Completion)
Proficient with Computer Ease and Microsoft Excel/Office
Knowledge of union payroll, practices and fringe reporting
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Experience managing audits and working with bonding/ insurance agents a plus
