The Purchasing Manager is responsible for developing and executing purchasing strategies, managing supplier relationships, and overseeing procurement operations to ensure cost-effective purchasing while maintaining quality and supply chain reliability. This role requires a strategic thinker who can negotiate the best possible deals, coordinate with internal teams regarding supply needs, and optimize purchasing activities and processes. The Purchasing Manager will also lead and mentor the purchasing team in their daily activities to drive efficiency and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Developing and implementing purchasing strategies.

Managing daily purchasing activities, supervising staff, and assigning tasks.

Managing supplier relationships and negotiating contracts, prices, and timelines.

Maintaining the supplier database, purchase records, and related documentation.

Review inventory levels and re-order points to determine upcoming levels of demand.

Ensure all procured items meet the required quality standards and specifications.

Preparing cost estimates for quotation purposes.

Working to improve purchasing systems and processes.

Establish a performance-based culture with suppliers.

Evaluate suppliers regarding satisfactory performance and ability to support VIKING Chemicals' requirements.

Daily review of material requirements and timely resolution of material shortages.

Collaborate directly with the Production Manager and Blending Supervisor to carry out work orders. Address any problems with delayed work orders, and implement a recovery plan schedule.

Monitor non-conforming material as it relates to production/deliveries.

Coordinate with logistics, operations, and warehouse teams to ensure efficient receipt, storage, and distribution of materials.

Forecast price and market trends to identify changes to the marketplace.

Oversee and mentor the purchasing team, ensuring clear objectives and professional development.

Provide leadership in daily procurement operations, problem resolution, and process improvements.

Foster a collaborative environment with internal teams, including sales, production, and customer service, to align purchasing strategies with business needs.

Skills and Requirements

Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent leadership abilities with experience managing a procurement team.

In-depth understanding of commodity chemical markets, pricing trends, and supply chain dynamics.

Experience working with ERP systems and procurement software.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements for chemical purchasing, handling, and transportation.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to manage supplier relationships and cross-functional teams.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities effectively.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field.

Professional certifications such as CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management) or APICS certification. (Preferred).

Over 5 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain management within the chemical industry.
