Job Duties/Responsibilities
Supervise the day to day operations of the specimen processing pre-analytical department
Supervise and support the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab automation and robotics systems.
Oversee pre-analytical workflows, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Serve as a critical liaison between specimen processing and analytical testing departments
Coordinate specimen workflow to ensure timely delivery to appropriate testing sections
Monitor specimen integrity and troubleshoot pre-analytical issues that may impact test results
Directly supervise, train, and mentor team of lab automation specialists in the department
Collaborate with engineering, IT, and laboratory teams to optimize workflows and resolve automation issues.
Monitor daily workflow in the lab and schedule adequate coverage
Responsible for ensuring all shifts in the department are properly staffed
Research and resolve any production errors while escalating when necessary
Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on process efficiency, error reduction, and workflow standardization.
Monitor system performance, analyze data, and implement solutions for equipment optimization and downtime reduction.
Perform quality assurance checks to ensure efficiency and accuracy
Prepare and maintain Quality Assurance records and documents
Implement and maintain specimen tracking systems to ensure chain of custody
Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their development
Responsible for administering and managing policies and procedures
Process and maintain payroll and personnel files
Perform administrative duties as needed
Qualifications and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required
Associates or higher in laboratory science, engineering, process engineering or related field preferred
3 years of relevant operations experience in a clinical laboratory setting, lab automation, robotics, or pre-analytical operations.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and data analytics
Understanding of laboratory testing workflows and pre-analytical variables
High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and prioritization skills
Previous supervisory or experience leading teams in a laboratory, manufacturing, or automation environment is a plus
Strong understanding of laboratory automation systems, robotics, and high-throughput workflows
Proficiency in process and workflow optimization and troubleshooting automated systems.
Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Experience with CAP, CLIA, or other laboratory regulatory requirements is a plus
Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies preferred
Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisions in a fast paced environment
Hands-on experience with liquid handling robots, automated specimen processing, or pre-analytical analyzers preferred
Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
