Description Cleans and maintains the shelter to include kennel areas; feeds and cares for animals; evaluates animals and helps match them with potential adopters.
Examples of Duties Cleans and maintains all Animal Shelter facilities.
Feeds, cares for, and medicates (as directed by the shelter veterinarian and allowed by law) impounded animals, isolated animals, and sick or injured and aggressive animals as required.
Moves animals among various areas within shelter facilities as required in a safe effective and humane manner.
Provides maintenance, painting and minor repairs of shelter equipment and apparatus.
Responds to or re-directs public inquiries in person and by phone to provide assistance, direction, or explanation of shelter programs and/or policies.
Educates prospective adopters on specific breeds, traits and requirements of animals placed for adoption.
Completes and maintains records pertaining to kennels, animals and supplies as required.
Answers, screens, and directs incoming calls to appropriate personnel and/or departments; may answer questions or disseminate information to callers.
Responds to routine inquiries regarding departmental operations, programs, and services; documents and/or assists in resolving public complaints.
Provides customer service and assistance to the public.
Perform the euthanasia of animals, including decision making, record keeping of files and drug logs, transport of animals to euthanasia area, restraint of animals during euthanasia, checking for vital signs subsequent to euthanasia, and removal of animal carcasses to storage areas.
Transports animals from carcass storage area to the digester, prep and complete decomposition process.
Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
One year experience working with animals is preferred.
Possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
Possess or ability to obtain within one year of hire a euthanasia certificate.
Physical Demands/Work Environment Lift and handle objects and animals weighing up to 60 pounds.
Restrain and handle animals up to 100 pounds.
Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, bend, reach, carry, hold, grasp and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items and operate computers, copy machines, phones, faxes and other office machines.
Must be able and willing to work shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
