A Brief Overview
The Ambulatory Safety Education Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating, maintaining and directing a standardized program for orientation, continuing education, and competency assessment for all Ambulatory partners who perform pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical instruments, equipment and scopes throughout University Hospital Health System.
What You Will Do
Developing and providing standards and materials for ongoing support of staff ability to learn, integrate and maintain strong knowledge base to safely handle and process reusable devices. Identifying and staying in-tune with advances in technology and national standard requirements. Includes creation and maintenance of GPS training modules in partnership with ambulatory clinical educators and department management.
Performing site assessments, providing new hire orientation, educational training, workflows, competency assessments and ongoing support for all University Hospitals Health System ambulatory sites utilizing reusable medical instruments, equipment and/or scopes.
Educating and motivating staff during orientation, training as well as communication of expectations and industry standards by utilizing established system-based SOPs and UH policies. Coordinating and planning continuing education opportunities to ensure certified staff maintain certification. Integrating manufacturer based educational opportunities to support staff.
Continually assessing the competency and performance level for all applicable staff by integrating a maintenance system to ensure ongoing competency for all essential reusable medical device requirements.
Communicating with site leadership in monitoring deficiencies in performance. Developing specific training programs/modules in response to process improvement opportunities.
Assuring all new employees complete the mandatory onboarding training and competency assessment within established timeframe parameters. Identifying deficiencies in learning and communicating with department management for recommendations.
Assuring all established staff complete annual competency assessments and maintaining documentation records for each individual by utilizing established maintenance system.
Providing instructions/materials to assist uncertified staff with preparation for certification attainment.
Active member of UH System HLD/CSP Tier 2 Committee.
Performing oversight of departmental quality assurance requirements to ensure reusable medical instruments, equipment and scopes are safe for patient use by conducting regular audits of areas performing reprocessing and storage of devices.
Retaining working knowledge of AAMI ST79 and AAMI ST91 as well as UH policies, guidelines and SOPs. Providing written resource documentation to support adherence to UH requirements. Ensuring adherence to all DNV, CMS, OSHA, FDA and AAMI regulations by traveling to all University Hospital Health System ambulatory sites that utilize reusable instruments, equipment and/or scopes to assess compliance and providing subsequent education for required remediation.
Maintaining positive relationships with management, patients, co-workers and customers.

Education
High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
Associate's Degree (Preferred)
Other Accredited Program Graduate of Sterile Processing program (Preferred)
Work Experience
2+ years direct work related experience in central sterilization department or high level disinfection department with progressive department responsibility (Required)
1+ years Previous experience as a high level disinfection or sterilization coordinator, educator or supervisory role (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Demonstrates in depth knowledge of AAMI Standard (ST) 79 and ST91 as well as UH policies, guidelines and SOPs (Required proficiency)
Strong written and verbal communication skills. ( proficiency)
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage site visit priorities, and maintain accurate records ( proficiency)

Experience and strong knowledge for steam sterilization, low temperature sterilization, decontamination, leak testing, flushing systems, ultrasonic, washer disinfectors, insulation testers, drying systems, manual cleaning verification, high level disinfection, chemicals, pre-cleaning, transport, labeling and storage. (Required proficiency)
Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot equipment and process defects. ( proficiency)
Ability to access resources for equipment support requirements. ( proficiency)
Understanding of education delivery methods and adult learning models. ( proficiency)
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of healthcare delivery systems and clinical care process. ( proficiency)
Demonstrated ability to analyze, develop, interpret and integrate clinical and financial information and alternatives. ( proficiency)
Knowledge of and experience with reusable instrumentation/equipment/scopes, sterilization practices, infection control standards, inventory control, and high level disinfection practice requirements. ( proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications
Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) (Required) or
Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) (Required) or
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) (Required) or
Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) (Required)
Instrument Specialist Certification from CBSDA or HSPA (Preferred)
