Psychiatric Attendant

Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and observant Psychiatric Attendant to provide direct care and support to patients in a secure behavioral health facility. This role focuses on maintaining safety, supporting therapeutic activities, and ensuring the wellbeing of individuals with mental health needs. The environment can be dynamic and requires strong situational awareness and a calm, responsive demeanor.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure safety and security within assigned patient care areas

Escort patients to and from meals, appointments, and activities

Observe and document patient behavior; intervene in crisis situations to prevent harm

Support daily living needs such as hygiene, dressing, meals, and medication prep (under nursing direction)

Assist in implementing treatment plan activities and encourage independence

Lead or participate in recreational or therapeutic programs

Maintain clean and sanitary living areas, assist with laundry and general housekeeping

Complete required documentation including incident reports, behavior logs, and supply orders

Participate in team meetings and ongoing training

Required Skills & Characteristics:

Ability to stay calm in high-pressure or emergency situations

Awareness of patient behavior and potential safety risks

Strong communication and teamwork skills

Basic math and reading skills

Reliable, compassionate, and detail-oriented

Minimum Qualifications:

Basic education in reading, writing, and arithmetic (high school diploma or GED preferred)

Ability to recognize and respond to unusual or potentially dangerous situations

Working Conditions:

Exposure to unpredictable behavior and communicable diseases

Shift-based schedule, including weekends and holidays
