Position Summary

Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for enforcing animal control laws and ordinances; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in zoology, biology, animal science, natural or environmental science, public administration, business administration or a related field; and

Four (4) years of experience in enforcing ordinances related to the control, impoundment and disposition of animals; and

To include two (2) years of experience in responding to and investigating malicious animal cruelty reports.

Lead or direct supervisory experience preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

Operations, services and activities of an animal control program

Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation

Modern and complex principles and practices of animal control and handling controlled substances

Basic computer programs such as excel, word

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations

Methods and techniques of enforcing animal control rules and regulations

Operational characteristics of animal control equipment and tools

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices Preferred Skills & Abilities

Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff

Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff

Identify various breeds and species of animals

Operate a variety of animal control equipment in a safe and effective manner

Provide testimony in court cases

Utilize basic computer programs used in the operation of assigned area

Interpret and explain City policies and procedures

Prepare clear and concise reports

Communicate clearly and concisely

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the general public
