Job Description

Senior System Administrator

The Senior System Administrator will operate in a security-sensitive military base environment, focusing on the administration of a specialized HVAC network and leading its EMASS certification process. This role involves ensuring the HVAC building control systems are secure, reliable, and compliant with Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity standards, while also managing and improving the base’s overall IT infrastructure. The incumbent will collaborate with both military and civilian personnel to maintain seamless operations and to implement critical projects such as enhanced firewall security and expanded network connectivity across the installation.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead EMASS certification efforts and compliance activities for the HVAC network, ensuring all systems meet DoD accreditation standards.

Oversee HVAC network operations, monitoring system performance and security to ensure high reliability and uptime.

Maintain and enhance HVAC building control systems, applying updates and optimizations for efficiency and security.

Administer and manage the IT infrastructure supporting the HVAC network, including performing regular system updates, managing server environments, and configuring network security (firewalls, switches, routers) in line with military security policies.

Plan and execute infrastructure side projects such as:

Firewall installations and upgrades in compliance with military security guidelines to bolster network defenses.

Deployment of radio-based internet access across the base to improve connectivity for remote or hard-to-wire locations.

Work directly with military and civilian personnel, providing technical expertise and support to ensure the seamless operation of IT services on the base as it relates to HVAC.

Ensure strict compliance with DoD cybersecurity standards and policies, continuously monitoring for vulnerabilities and implementing security best practices (in alignment with frameworks like RMF and NIST guidelines).

Ability to work with government personnel to pass STIGs testing

Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in IT systems administration or a similar role, with progressive responsibilities in network and systems management.

Hands-on experience with EMASS (Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service) is required, including familiarity with the DoD accreditation process and documentation.

Strong expertise in HVAC control systems and their integration with IT networks, including experience troubleshooting and optimizing building automation systems.

Proven experience working in a military base or DoD environment, understanding the operational security requirements and protocols of a secured facility.

Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance (Active Secret clearance or higher preferred), due to the sensitive nature of the work.

Familiarity with DoD cybersecurity frameworks and standards, such as the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and other relevant NIST guidelines for system security and accreditation.

Excellent vendor management and project management skills, with a track record of overseeing IT infrastructure improvements (e.g., coordinating hardware installations, network upgrades, and security enhancements) on time and within scope.

Understanding of BAS system Automation hardware and software is a huge plus.

This position demands a high level of trust, technical acumen, and adherence to security protocols. The ideal candidate will be a self-driven professional who can lead complex certification efforts, effectively secure critical systems, and contribute to the mission-readiness of the base’s technology environment.
