Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Senior Scientist to join our dynamic Chemical Process Research & Development team. The ideal candidate will have experience in flow chemistry principles and techniques while also contributing to traditional batch chemistry and other process development initiatives. Expertise in Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) and automated chemical process workstations is required. This role will focus on developing innovative solutions for both continuous and batch chemical processes, supporting the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates.
Core Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and optimize both continuous flow and batch processes for the synthesis of APIs and intermediates.
Conduct scale-up studies to transition processes from lab-scale to pilot plant and manufacturing scales, including Hazard and Operability Assessments (HAZOP) to ensure process safety and robustness.
Collaborate with process chemists and engineers while providing technical leadership and guidance on flow chemistry.
Identify and propose value-added opportunities for continuous flow processing by analyzing client needs and evaluating RFPs.
Design and execute experiments using automated chemistry workstations for both flow and batch processes, incorporating Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) to analyze data, identify kinetic trends, optimize reaction conditions, and improve process efficiency.
Develop and validate analytical methods to monitor reaction progress and ensure product quality.
Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory records, including experimental protocols, technical reports, and regulatory documentation.
Lead individual and team experimental outputs with scientific integrity, ensuring timely, high-quality results while adapting to project demands.
Ensure all documentation produced is in compliance with Company standards.
Responsible for contributing to audit readiness and for participating in quality and EHS audits with FDA, internal Company groups, other Regulatory Agencies, and customers, as needed.
Responsible for reporting all near misses, accidents, and dangerous occurrences through the appropriate Company procedures to ensure an investigation is initiated.
Ensures work is in compliance with all state and federal regulations, including but not limited to GMP, DEA, FDA, etc.
Qualifications:
Required
PhD in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline; B.S. or M.S. with extensive industry experience is acceptable.
5+ years of industrial experience in chemical process development, including flow chemistry and laboratory automation.
Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills, with a "can-do" attitude and a focus on practical solutions in fast-paced environments.
Deep understanding of kinetics and transport mechanisms in continuous processing and flow chemistry.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant modeling and control software (e.g., Dynochemâ„¢, Signals Lab Notebook, MATLAB, JMP, Mettler Toledo iC Suite).
Expertise in Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) (e.g., ReactIR, ReactRaman, NMR, online UPLC), automated chemical process workstations, and analytical techniques (e.g., UPLC, GC-MS, NMR).
Extensive experience in the design, operation, and troubleshooting of flow chemistry reactors (e.g., Vapourtec, h.e.l., ThalesNano, Syrris) and accessories like static mixers.
Proven ability to write clear, concise technical reports and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Experience mentoring and training staff within areas of expertise.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
