PURPOSE OF POSITION To assist the Director of Library Services in the operation and maintenance of the Navajo Preparatory School, Inc.

library, and to assist students and staff with accessing library resources.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED plus one (1) year of administrative support experience in an academic, public, or specialty library.

An AA degree in library science, education or business is preferred.

A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied.

Possession of or ability to obtain a Level III Educational Assistant license from the New Mexico Public Education Department, preferred.

A valid driver's license with a safe driving record.

Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System of classification, machine readable cataloging (MARC) tagging, library cataloging conventions, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.

Knowledge of current library/office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of safe cash handling techniques.

Ability to work well with adolescents.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to operate various office equipment and software.

Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making difficult decisions while under stress with composure, tact, and dignity.

Attentive to details, accuracy, and neatness.

Willingness to keep abreast of changing technologies and to assume new responsibilities required by the introduction of new services and equipment.

High level of organizational and research skills.

Navajo/Indian preference: Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position.

The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION The position is based on the school year.

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc.

Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

Head Librarian RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc.

(NPS) Policies and Procedures.

Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.

Secures and protects the confidentiality of NPS, Inc.

in regard to student and faculty personnel matters.

Knows and follows NPS library policies and procedures.

Assists students and staff in locating library materials for class assignments, research and independent reading.

Assists student and faculty in the use of computer software and on-line services available in the library.

Assists with the supervision of students.

Maintains atmosphere conducive to study.

Oversees general neatness and attractiveness of library.

Shelves returned materials.

Operates, maintains and troubleshoots automated library system.

Schedules, maintains and assists faulty with the use of audiovisual, technology and office equipment.

Assembles material requested for special use.

Processes new materials and repairs damaged items.

Maintains bulletin boards, prepares newsletters and assists with public relations activities.

Answers telephone, takes messages, files paperwork, types correspondence and performs routine office procedures.

Maintains confidentiality of information.

Oversees circulation of library resources.

Assists with library inventory.

Safeguards and secures library facility, materials, and equipment.

Reports to work on time every day.

Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor.

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc.

policies and procedures.
