Job Summary:
The Laboratory QC Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tests on soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt materials in accordance with Caltrans, ASTM, and AASHTO standards. This is a lab-only position requiring attention to detail, adherence to standardized procedures, and compliance with project specifications for public and private infrastructure projects across California.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct laboratory testing of construction materials including soils, aggregates, fresh and hardened concrete, and asphalt mixtures.
Follow standardized testing procedures to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and compliance with applicable agency standards.
Prepare test samples, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and document all results in a clear and timely manner.
Calibrate and maintain testing equipment in accordance with internal quality control protocols and accreditation requirements.
Ensure that all test data is complete, properly recorded, and submitted to clients, engineers, or project managers as needed.
Assist in organizing and maintaining lab inventory, supplies, and work areas.
Participate in internal quality assurance and safety programs as required.
Support trial batch evaluations for concrete and asphalt mix designs as directed.
Maintain up-to-date certifications and participate in ongoing training and compliance updates.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or technical coursework in construction materials or civil engineering preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a materials testing laboratory.
Current certifications through the Caltrans/Local Agencies Joint Training and Certification Program (JTCP) in:
Soils
Aggregate
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)
Portland Cement Concrete (PCC)
Strong understanding of Caltrans testing procedures and documentation requirements.
Familiarity with laboratory reporting systems and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow procedures.
Able to lift 50 lbs. and work on your feet for extended periods in a laboratory setting.
Knowledge of AASHTO R18 quality systems is a plus.
