Description
Under the direction of the Traffic Engineering Operations Manager, performs skilled technical and administrative work coordinating the day-to-day maintenance operation of the City's Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), Fiber Optic Wide Area Network (WAN), Traffic Signal Systems, Communications Networks or any other duties related to traffic signals, communications, ATMS and preventive maintenance. Directs traffic signal technician(s) as needed.
Examples of Duties
Repairs and maintains traffic signals, trouble shoots defective traffic cabinet components and field wiring.
Performs preventive maintenance work on traffic signals and flashers.
Works in aerial bucket truck for replacing and repairing traffic signal lamps, overhead wiring, traffic signal assemblies, video and detection devices.
Changes timing on signal controllers as needed and directed.
Maintains City of Melbourne's Advanced Traffic Management System and Fiber Optic Wide Area Network (WAN).
Installs and maintains data networking equipment (switches, routers, hubs, encoders, terminal servers, etc.
Provides hardware information, recommendations, and configurations for all information networks.
Maintains a proactive role understanding and evaluating emerging technologies and City needs.
Maintains records and tracks repairs.
Prepares maintenance reports.
Tracks inventory to ensure adequate parts and supplies are on-hand.
Provides technical support and guidance to personnel.
Performs on-call duty for after hour's emergency or other standby requirements as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Must be IMSA Level II or III Traffic Signal Field Technician and Traffic Signal Inspector certified.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in traffic signal maintenance including five (5) years of experience in network system design and maintenance and ITS equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience utilizing ATMS.now application software.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and theory of electronics.
A solid understanding of the engineering principles of traffic signal timings and coordination.
Knowledge of NEC, NEMA and IMSA codes, requirements and functions.
Troubleshoot various video equipment, network equipment and Trafficware signal equipment.
Knowledge needed to operate computer application software such as ATMS.now.
Extensive knowledge of electronics, fiber optics and network system design.
Extensive knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of computer networks.
Ability to configure and trouble-shoot routers, switches, and specialized traffic signal control and other associated equipment.
Ability to regularly make decisions that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if failure to make the appropriate decision occurs.
Ability to understand and carry out directions. Ability to plan work assignments.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Ability to reach overhead, climb, stand, walk, balance, push, pull, crouch, crawl and kneel.
Ability to see colors, hear and speak.
Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain, cold.
Ability to work while exposed to excessive wind, fumes, odors, noise, vibration and dust.
Ability to read and comprehend technical and professional manuals, procedures, periodicals, maps, wiring diagrams, schematics, instructions, safety rules, memos and letters.
Ability to write compound sentences relating information, data, and details in report or summary form.
Ability to perform shop math and basic mathematical functions.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
