The Role:
Backstage is seeking a Data Engineer - Data & Analytics with experience in marketplace ecosystems and a passion for transforming raw data into actionable, scalable solutions. You will joining our data team, which currently includes a Data Engineer, a Data Scientist, and a Senior Manager, Business Intelligence. The data team is part of the larger Product and Engineering department, which consists of high-performance engineers, designers, product managers, analysts, and quality assurance resources. The data team supports seven businesses within TCS, applying a unified data strategy across all of them. Our data engineering efforts are dedicated to strengthening core data assets that drive business decisions, power marketing operations, enable product customization, and make our products smarter for customers. Every month, we bring together all GMs and key cross-functional stakeholders for a data roadmap meeting, where we collaboratively prioritize the most valuable work for the organization. This process ensures that the projects you work on are always high-impact, aligned with current business needs, and built on a data strategy that delivers continuous, reusable value over the long term.
As our Data Engineer - Data & Analytics, you will design and maintain robust data pipelines, harmonize multimodal data into a unified ontological layer, and partner with cross-functional teams to drive data-driven decision-making. Your work will directly enable AI innovation, revenue optimization, and operational excellence. A major component of this role will include tying behavioral and web metrics to revenue and retention.
The Data Engineer - Data & Analytics will report to Backstage’s Senior Manager, Business Intelligence.
What You’ll Do:
Build, optimize, and maintain dbt-based data transformation pipelines in Redshift and PostgreSQL to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance
Harmonize data from disparate systems (e.g., transactional databases, third-party APIs, event streams) into a unified ontological layer for use by data scientists and AI developers
Implement CI/CD practices and version control (e.g., Gitlab) for analytics codebases to ensure reproducibility and collaboration
Develop pipelines capable of reverse extraction and integrate data into martech tools (e.g., Hightouch)
Work with session-level data to support user journey analysis, attribution modeling, and behavioral analytics
Delivering data in ways that inspire action and keep stakeholders engaged over time
Ensure data quality, lineage, and transparency through automated testing, monitoring, and documentation
Advocate for software engineering best practices: modular code, unit testing, and clear documentation
Partner with product, finance, and marketing teams to translate business opportunities into data model requirements
Support the analytical needs of the marketing team by designing and maintaining data models and dashboards that enable campaign measurement, segmentation, and ROI analysis
Use BI tools (Looker, Tableau) to create dashboards that communicate insights to non-technical stakeholders
What we’re looking for from you:
8+ years related experience in data engineering, operations or analytics supporting customer service and/or experience
Hands-on experience working with a modern analytics tech stack (e.g., Looker, Amplitude, DBT, Fivetran, Stitch)
Proven track record of building pipelines for multimodal data integration and reverse extraction
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, version control, and DevOps principles for analytics
Strong understanding of data modeling, ontology design, and collaboration with AI/ML teams
Excellent communication skills to translate technical concepts for business audiences
Exceptional SQL skills; you are able to transform data using SQL, with a strong preference on experience with dbt
Deep understanding of how to build automatic alerting and testing on dashboards; data governance on the metrics you deliver will also be critical
Ability to develop an in depth understanding of our ETL processes
Understanding of subscription and digital marketing conversion metrics
Experience with web event collection and reporting, preferably in Amplitude
Familiarity with SaaS metrics, attribution modeling, web event tracking; understanding of metric trees is also important
Empathy and curiosity; you like to understand stakeholders’ needs and derive satisfaction from building dashboards that tell a story
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to distill technical language to technical and non-technical audiences
Positive attitude and comfort with collaborating in a remote setting
Proactive, autonomous, and organized, with solid time and project management skills
Desire to learn and grow in a culture of candid feedback and healthy debate
Passion for using data to solve business problems
Special Work Conditions
Sedentary – Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Some positions may entail exerting up to 15 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or pull.

Compensation is commensurate with various factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skills, training, licensure, certifications, geographic cost of labor, and other business and organizational needs. Compensation range for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. The compensation range for this position is: $135,000.00 - $155,000.00 per year.
