Are you a hands-on Engineering Manager with rapid response prototyping experience? We have an immediate opening for an experience Prototype Engineering Manager to lead Advanced Prototyping activities executed through the Prototype Pit Crew. This is a critical leadership role responsible for rapidly and efficiently developing product prototypes from concepts and ideas with varying levels of detail. The Prototype Pit Crew team works collaboratively with other functions to ensure proper support to achieve on-time delivery of assigned projects.
This position requires a blend of technical knowledge, project management skills and team leadership abilities. To be successful in this role, you must be a hands-on engineering leader with prior prototyping experience and structural development background. Your team will juggle numerous fast moving and ever-changing projects simultaneously so you must be able to adapt to shifting priorities and make quick judgement calls.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management for all projects.
Lead the planning, execution and delivery of prototype builds.
Manage project schedules, budgets and resource allocation.
Coordinate prototype testing and validation, including support for field trials and/or lab testing.
Ensure the optimal application of technology and resources to meet timelines and requirements.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to translate concepts into physical prototypes.
Direct the transition of Engineering designs from prototype builds through hand-off with manufacturing to improve new product launch success.
Lead VOC and non-standard option development, testing and hand off to development or sustaining engineering.
Lead Technology roadmap and strategic plan concepting and hand off to Development Engineering.
Direct team members and managers in prototype part procurement, manufacturing, inspection and storage.
Up to 25% travel may be required for this position.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with focus on design and new product development.
10 years’ experience in product development of utility trucks, refuse vehicles, or heavy equipment.
3 years of management or supervisory experience leading new product development teams.
Strong knowledge of prototype development processes, fabrication techniques, and testing methodologies.
Proven track record managing prototype or development builds from concept to field validation.
Hands-on experience with CAD tools (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks), PLM systems, and BOM management.
Familiarity with hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems in heavy machinery.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Strong knowledge of manufacturing equipment, processes, and manufacturability of designs.
Strong project management skills with demonstrated team building and leadership skills.
Experience with new product launches, continuous improvement and directing strategic initiatives.
Exhibit strong problem-solving skills with ability to lead a team within a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and multiple open projects.
Willingness and ability to access new methods or technologies at various levels of detail. To quickly categorize it as ‘worth further investigation’ and then to pursue that investigation, validation and documentation.
Availability to travel up to 25% and maintain a flexible work schedule during critical stages of development projects to achieve result.
