Reports to: Director of Technology Systems

General Summary:

The Network Technician plays a vital role in supporting the district’s network infrastructure under the direction of the Network & Systems Manager. The Network Technician assists with the technical coordination of network administration for Traverse City Area Public Schools. This role is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network hardware, software, and services across the district. The position maintains the availability, functionality, and performance of the network-computing environment, including but not limited to voice, video, and data application utilization. This includes operational supervision and monitoring of resources located in the TCAPS Data Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with the implementation of network projects in assigned areas, including fiber optic, wireless LAN, Firewall, cloud architecture, and Point-to-Point microwave links.

Assist in performing network hardware and software upgrades.

Assist with software, hardware, or network configuration evaluations before major software or hardware purchases are made.

Assist with the operation and testing of network software and hardware configurations. Ability to troubleshoot network hardware and software, including servers, storage, routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless controllers and access points.

Assists with maintaining disaster planning, backups, and emergency response.

Assists with developing and maintaining system accounts, profiles, and data retention.

Assist in monitoring the performance of all network servers on a daily basis to detect potential errors or problems and provide necessary prevention guidelines.

Assist in the coordination and administration of hardware and software security procedures, including but not limited to anti-virus and patch management.

Provides ancillary support/assistance for district systems with database components.

Assists with the coordination and administration of hardware and software security procedures, including all aspects of cybersecurity.

Monitoring the performance of all network servers on a daily basis to detect potential errors or problems and provide necessary prevention guidelines.

Provide ongoing support to users.

Assist technology integration efforts.

Available for emergency calls and troubleshooting information systems 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Troubleshoot and resolve network communication problems.

Develop the automation of procedures to streamline department processes.

Coordinate/develop/maintain documentation for all technological systems within the district.

Participate in team, department, and organizational activities, meetings, and committees.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and a minimum of 3 years of related or relevant experience; or other equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Four or more years of previous work experience and knowledge of electronics, computers, software, and network integration.

Certification related to network administration and/or desktop/ user support preferred.

Must be able to learn and support new and quickly changing technologies.

Familiarity with a wide range of standard office automation products.

Ability to research solutions or information regarding technical issues.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.

Ability to communicate effectively, including listening, speaking, and writing skills.

Ability to work independently and show excellent organizational skills with emphasis on details and time management.

Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and concern for the preservation of sensitive/confidential information.

Ability to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and utilize various tools involved in the installation of computer equipment and properly operate required office equipment such as a personal computer, fax machine, copier, and the like.

Occasionally moves boxes and office supplies weighing up to 50 lbs across the office for various needs.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the office.

Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.

Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying.

Must have the ability to move about the building, which includes bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks.

Regular use of a computer and other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.)

The ability to listen and effectively communicate, both written and orally, information and ideas to a diverse population.

Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).

Ability to think critically and provide appropriate solutions.

Ability to work effectively and efficiently in high-stress or conflict situations.

Ability to move and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Must hold a valid driver's license and have the ability to drive to various locations throughout the district.

Environmental Conditions:

This position works in both indoor and outdoor environments, with travel throughout the district. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, as well as working with machines/equipment, including work on ladders, slippery and/or uneven surfaces.

Work Schedules:

Must be available for overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday, when necessary.
