Description:

St. George, UT, USA Full Time

SUMMARY

Intergalactic is a team of engineers, technologists, designers, mathematicians, and problem solvers committed to a singular idea: reviving the no-boundaries mentality in aerospace. We are a team of the nation's best, regardless of where we live.

The Aerospace Systems Dynamics and Control Engineer fosters innovation and consistency by developing and being accountable for system-level control architectures and control law design. In cooperation with the Program Management team, the Aerospace Systems Dynamics and Control Engineer leads the control logic formulation and implementation for technical development projects. This role is responsible for the technical execution of the system controls for program while also serving as the primary technical point of contact for clients regarding controls architecture. During the program, the Aerospace Systems Dynamics and Controls Engineer works in tandem with the Systems Engineers and Software Engineers to coordinate the development and architecting of control laws, Built-In Test Formation, decomposing system level requirements into lower level controls requirements for software implementation, selecting appropriate valves and electronics to the control design, dynamic transient modeling and analysis, and testing for tasks such as gains tuning and system verification and validation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and be responsible for program's system control architecture and technical approach. This can include dynamic and transient thermal analysis, controls analysis, reliability analysis, testing, test analysis, and other accepted methods in aerospace for the development and verification and validation of controls.

Identify and manage program's technical risks with regards to system controls.

Serve as technical controls lead for programs, provide clear objectives that are measurable and attainable, and coordinate technical activities with internal resources (engineers across different functional groups including analysis, software, and electrical) and external resources (vendors, contractors).

Work closely with the Systems Engineer and other engineering disciplines to optimize system design and ensure successful execution of development programs.

Manage and account for technical requirements from the top down - traceability, decomposition, derivation, and verification & validation for transient performance, fault detection, and controls stability.

Decompose high-level dynamic and controls requirements into lower-level specifications to internal functional groups, components, and suppliers as applicable.

Researching and recommending investments or changes in technology, toolsets, procedures, equipment, systems, etc. to continually improve the discipline health and the Intergalactic's products and services.

Communicate and collaborate with customers and suppliers as part of design development process.

Review and approve documentation for transition from prototype to production.

Provide engineering support to trouble shoot and diagnose non-performing products (RCCA, lessons learned, etc.).

Work with software and integration engineers to implement, test, and debug control law algorithms.

Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication.

Working knowledge of key aerospace technical disciplines including requirements management, technical verification and validation methodologies, mechanical design, materials, modeling/documentation, structural analysis, thermal fluid sciences, electrical systems, system controls, embedded controls, development testing and analysis, qualification analysis and testing.

Excellent interpersonal relationship building both internally and externally.

Understanding of aerospace requirements management methodologies and processes - traceability, decomposition, derivation verification, and validation.

Functional understanding of major aircraft systems: environmental control systems, powerplant, electrical, hydraulics, controls, avionics, power generation, and structures.

Experience with Vapor Cycle Systems (VCS), Liquid Cooling Systems (LCS) and/or Air Cycle Systems (ACS)

Expertise and experience in constructing physics based dynamic models of components in Thermal Management Systems such as heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, turbines, valves, fans, etc..

Strong coding/scripting experience (preferably in MATLAB).

Expertise with Simulink including auto-coding.

Strong controls background in linear/nonlinear controls systems and analysis and solvers including as in depth knowledge of transient/dynamic system modeling and architecting control laws and BIT.

Expertly conduct accepted dynamic/controls analysis such as full flight envelope simulations, System Identification, Relative Gain Analysis, Monte Carlo Random Walk (system controls robustness), transient pull up and pull down performance analysis, stability analysis, signals processing, etc.

Knowledge and experience in designing SISO, MISO, and MIMO type closed loop control laws for thermal systems to optimize cooling and power consumption and protective controls for safety.

Familiarity with Model Predictive Controls (MPC)

Expertise in controls development and gain tuning in development and V&V testing

Experience and familiarity with RTCA DO-178

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Independent initiative.

Productive collaboration.

A polite, helpful, and friendly demeanor.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

10% or less travel is expected for this position. Infrequent travel to suppliers, customers, or other locations is expected.

WORK AUTHORIZATION

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
