Closes: June 19, 2025 Starting Range: $52.79 to $69.42 per hour Full Range: $52.79 to $86.05 per hour Job Description The Real Time Trader is responsible for optimizing Avista's resources to serve all obligations in the most economical and reliable manner while integrating current system and market conditions.
This position purchases and sells energy and transmission on an hourly/daily basis to meet fluctuations in supply and demand; ensures that pricing and terms are favorable and consistent with company risk management guidelines.
Optimize Avista's system in Organized Markets, Real Time and future time horizons.
Responsibilities * Manage the hourly schedule of power purchases, power sales, and schedule internal generation to meet physical and financial positions.
Ensure that all customers have a continuous supply of energy available and reduce the net cost of energy delivered by adjusting the hourly pre-schedule and generation output on real time.
* Performs complex analysis and reports to assist internal stakeholders to support ongoing energy portfolio decisions.
* Produce an hourly record of power sales, power purchases, generation, and transmission interchange energy transactions; the record must be complete and accurate.
* Performs transmission and generation analysis.
Strategically manage transmission and generation to extract value from markets.
Researches the current and expected price and availability of electric energy within the interconnected system.
Uses this information to adjust the pre-schedule in a manner which decreases the net cost of energy delivered to the customers and/or creates value for the company.
* Assists System Operations in meeting established NERC and WECC operating standards.
* Creates the economic and reliable dispatch plan of Avista's generation resources.
* Manage real time generation derates/re-rates and coordinates unit outages.
* Manage river flows and operations to ensure optimization of hydro assets and pond storage.
Adhere to FERC requirements.
* Participate in wholesale contract negotiations and portfolio strategies.
* Use, maintain and analyze data from optimization and modeling tools to make operational and transactional decisions and/or recommendations.
Manage optimization modeling applications to assist in determining economic position strategies and to perform data submissions to applicable reliability and market authorities.
Requirements * 4 years' experience in energy trading, derivatives, marketing or bulk electric and gas system management.
* Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience.
* This person must be able to perform while working rotating shifts.
* Excellent math, Excel, communication, sales and negotiating skills are required.
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
The successful candidate will be required to work at our Spokane, Washington headquarters and participate in 12-hour rotating shifts.
