DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

SPECIAL NOTE: Apprentices and Trainees are eligible, as part of their position, to receive educational expense reimbursement. These expense reimbursements are limited to approved State of Michigan and partner College apprentice curriculum courses and books. It will also include the reimbursement for any necessary tests or licenses required as part of your position and job description, except your required Michigan Driver's License. Reimbursement does not include wages for attending classes or mileage.

This position is responsible for working on electrical installations, maintenance, and repair work for City buildings and structures.The employee is considered to be "in training" for the position of Journeyman Electrician, under the supervision of the Master of Record Electrician, the employee, with appropriate supervision will perform increasingly difficult tasks relating to the installation, operation, maintenance, trouble shooting, repair, and replacement of electrical equipment and components of various voltages.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with and perform the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, transformers, switches, and related equipment and systems in City buildings and structures.

Learn to test electrical components and determines repair needs; performs repairs as needed and instructed.

Prepares estimates for time and material costs associated with daily work. Maintains records of completed work

Assists with the work of other trades or divisions as needed,

Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required college level classes, with satisfactory progression and grades in order to qualify as a Journeyman Electrician within 5 years of hire. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

KNOWLEDGE:

Basic Electrical principles and practices;

Applicable tools and equipment;

Ability to learn Applicable codes and ordinances;

Occupational hazards and safe work methods and practices;

Recordkeeping principles. SKILLS :

Ability to learn job planning, installation techniques, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment;

Learning to estimate time and material costs;

Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the general public and others to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to mechanical parts, inadequate lighting, work space restricts movement, and travel.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A strong mechanical aptitude and ability to successfully complete the college level Electrical Apprentice curriculum.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Michigan Drivers License;

Journeyman Electrician License within five (5) years of hire The following must be acquired within 6 months of hire:

Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License Class B with Air Brake Endorsement

Aerial Platform Certification

Confined Space Training

Work Zone Safety Training

Register Annually as a Michigan Apprentice Electrician

POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:

Satisfactory completion of background check and a pre-employment physical and drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law.
